Review

"This is a book that should set off needed conversations in every school and classroom and school board meeting―and the dinner table. Sometimes I wanted to quarrel with the authors, and that′s part of its genius. It always managed to provoke me to think and to engage with these dilemmas." Author: Deborah Meier, Senior Scholar and Adjunct Professor Published On: 2009-08-10"Schools are full of situations fraught with ethical implications. The Mackenzies show us how to recognize moral dilemmas, employ guidelines for addressing them, and, by walking us through abundant yeasty cases, teach us how to resolve them on our own. A gift to educators, the educational profession, and to all who would behave ethically and professionally within it." Author: Roland Barth, Educational Consultant Published On: 2009-08-10

About the Author

Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. Statin Nation: The Ill-Founded War on Cholesterol, What Really Causes Heart Disease, and the Truth About the Most Overprescribed Drugs in the World

Review

“In my experience, statin drugs are the number one cause of iatrogenic (doctor-caused) disease in the United States. For those who want proof, I suggest they read Statin Nation. Justin Smith doesn’t fall for the usual “coronary artery plaque is the only cause of heart disease” mantra. That theory―and its attendant drugs, stents, and bypasses―has been a boondoggle for the medical-industrial complex but not so helpful for people. In Statin Nation, Smith carefully and accurately assesses this misguided theory, comes to more well founded conclusions, and helps his readers find their way to more productive approaches to preventing and treating heart disease. Well done.”―Thomas Cowan, MD, author of Human Heart, Cosmic Heart“This book amalgamates and updates the author’s two Statin Nation documentaries, which are also highly recommended. It provides a succinct but comprehensive discussion of the fallacies of the lipid hypothesis of coronary heart disease. It explains why neither cholesterol nor saturated fats cause heart attacks and why there is no such thing as “good” or “bad” cholesterol. Abundant references for those who want additional information.”―Paul J. Rosch, MD, clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry, New York Medical College; chairman of the board, The American Institute of Stress“A complete and authoritative explanation of the causes of heart disease. Smith’s presentation explains why statin therapy is ineffective and dangerous, and why the cholesterol hypothesis is obsolete and disproven by scientific evidence. This book fills an important need for a comprehensive explanation of the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to profit from statin drugs, of the trivial effect on prevention of heart disease by these drugs, and of their serious toxic side effects. More importantly, the book describes the true causes of heart disease and emphasizes optimal nutrition as the correct approach to prevention.”―Kilmer McCully, MD, author of The Heart Revolution“Our utmost wealth is our health. Accordingly, Statin Nation demonstrates that lifestyle changes are the cornerstone of good cardiovascular health, and that the supposed benefits of widely used heart medicine―lauded by industry-sponsored research―are based on flawed science. I concur with Justin in this effort to warn our population about the dangers of statin drugs.”―Sherif Sultan, PhD, professor of vascular surgery, National University of Ireland; president, International Society for Vascular Surgery

Justin Smith is the producer, director, and writer of the documentaries Statin Nation I and II. He was formerly a personal trainer, sports massage therapist, and nutrition coach. The documentaries arose from a general-nutrition book planned by Justin. You are living in the times of the inevitable surrender of the pharmaceutical/governmental/medical establishment cabal to the truth. It will be difficult, but the truth is leaking out in spite of their best efforts. Pity the poor people who still yield their health management to their doctors entirely.

Good read. Has adequate references. Makes good points. Probably a bit light on references and biased in its research and viewpoints. I wouldn't bet your life on just this book's advice, but a worthy set of concepts to consider.

Easyly read and well documented. The simmares of studies are convinceing.Every doctor should read it.The best antistatin bok I have read.

Glad this was inexpensive. Not sure what made me think there was some new information in this book. There's not.

This is crazy. We need to remove the word science from medical science. Every time there’s a breakthrough answer, it proves to be totally false. So millions follow medical advice for nothing (and worse). And keep following it, as the false solutions persist despite debunking. The system is entirely corrupted by the pharmaceutical companies, planting false stories, fear mongering diseases and conditions, bribing doctors and corrupting medical journals. Justin Smith corrects the nasty reputation of cholesterol, breaks the relation to heart disease, and destroys the dietary regimens recommended for decades (and insisted on by health insurers). In Statin Nation, Smith presents the results of nine years’ research, highly documented. Why anyone should trust their doctor is about the only question unanswered.Smith is upsetting. He overturns decades of comforting facts. They are comforting because we have considered them as established and deal with them as real. But what Smith has found:-Only 39% of men and 34% of women with heart disease have high cholesterol.-High cholesterol correlates to longer life. Low cholesterol indicates shorter life expectancy.-A meta-analysis of 11 major studies concluded that statins offer no net benefit for prevention of death by all causes. But 75% take it for precisely that.-Big Pharma keeps lowering the safe cholesterol level, making it nearly unattainable and putting millions more in position for statin treatments for life.-Statins save approximately one life per thousand taking them. But result in hundreds of deaths because of them. They are unsafe drugs.-The recommended maximum 1.5-2g of sodium per day is too low and actually causes cardiovascular problems rather than preventing them according to numerous studies.-Stress, which used to be short and acute, is chronic in our society, and is the primary cause of cardiovascular ailments and death.-Fat is the heart’s preferred main source of energy, but stress changes that to glucose-burning instead.-86% of medical students think politicians should not accept gifts, but only 46% say the same for themselves.Smith never intended to go down this path. He began researching nutrition and fitness for a book and it has turned into nine years, two documentaries and this book, all focused on cholesterol. His basic discovery is that we continue to be misled, by both ignorance and fraud. Medicine actually has very few firm answers, just a lot of trends and anecdotes in the form of inadequate studies, the worth of which remain hidden from the public. Statin Nation appears to be both sensible and credible, and anyone interested in some hope and guidance along with the discouraging news should read it.David Wineberg

Virginia Woolf: A Portrait, by Viviane Forrester

Review

Virginia Woolf was the object of considerable mystery. Viviane Forrester not only tells us about this mystery but clarifies it. At the beginning, the biographer announces that she will shatter equivocal and false portraits. She does precisely that. The result marks a decisive break in the knowledge we thought we had of this English writer. Forrester crosses the threshold of truth. Without reproving those who wrote before her, knowing what was said and how, Forrester provides a staggering analysis of the youth, marriage, work, and world of Woolf. She tracks, close up, the internal defense mechanisms and means of protection that veil the truth. In a style as poetic as the novelist/poetess deserves, Forrester throws light on the life and the death, Woolf's two tragedies, and reveals the price of her scintillating work. (Alice Ferney Le Figaro)Over the years, Viviane Forrester has read and annotated all the journals of Woolf, the five volumes of her correspondence, including, among other things, the letters from her father, Leslie Stephen, and those from her sister, Vanessa Bell, whom Virginia idolized and envied her entire life. Such a considerable quantity of fragments of a vast, complex mosaic, assembled here by the biographer, provides a new vision of Woolf. We discover her close up, fleeing, uncatchable, by turn fragile, ferocious, resplendent, or perverse.... In a lively and limpid style, Forrester attacks first the myths that have calcified around Woolf. First among them, that of her 'madness.' Under the sharp pen of Forrester, therefore, Virginia is not mad, nor is she a martyr. (Lila Azam Zanganeh LE MONDE)An engrossing, intimate, and deeply empathetic portrayal of a brilliant and enigmatic woman. (Kirkus Reviews)Nimbly moving from one fragmentary impression to another, Forrester challenges the idea (proposed by Woolf's nephew, Quentin Bell, in his biography of her) that Woolf was afflicted with mental illness and suicidal impulses when she was a teenager. Instead, Forrester offers the portrait of a woman who strove to strip away any illusions and capture the rhythms of reality in her writings. (Publishers Weekly)Intriguing.... Illuminating.... Readers interested in Virginia Woolf, the Bloomsbury circle, and early twentieth-century modernist writers will require this biography. (Library Journal)[A] brilliant, provocative biography. (Jocelyn McClurg USA Today)[Virginia Woolf: A Portrait] offers unexpected insights and useful challenges to settled ideas about Woolf, her friendships, her marriage, and her imagination. (Anne Fernald Open Letters Monthly)A provocative portrait, richly woven with Woolf's distinctive voice and Forrester's faithful echo. (Maureen McCarthy Star Tribune)Forrester should be commended for attempting to produce a portrait based almost entirely on primary sources, one that tries to get back to the essence of Woolf in her own words. (Drew Patrick Shannon MFS: Modern Fiction Studies)

Readers expecting a linear narrative of Woolf's life will be sadly disappointed. VIRGINIA WOOLF: A PORTRAIT comprises a series of biographical snapshots that roam freely through past, present and future, combining different moments in her often colorful life within each chapter to help us better understand the mind of this complex personality. Forrester is especially preoccupied with Woolf's relationship to husband Leonard, a complex character who from this account emerges as someone who claimed to love his wife dearly yet remained perpetually resentful of her success, especially when it was Leonard who constructed himself as the business manager in charge of Hogarth Press. Such inadequacies had a lot to do with Leonard's family life as he was brought up by a dominant mother who heartily resented his decision to marry someone like Virginia, despite her social advantages. The overriding impression persisting through Forrester's work is that of innate sadness. Woolf was possessed of an innate genius, the ability to create fiction that radically redefined the way we approach the act of reading. Like her or loathe her, you cannot deny that she bestrode the world of early twentieth century literature like a Colossus, generating heated debate among her readers as well as causing controversy herself through her nonfictional writing. She was happiest when she was alone, trying to make sense of what was buzzing within her mind through crafting prose.Yet Woolf was also a public figure, a member of the Bloomsbury Group as well as a noted broadcaster, speaker and socialite. Yet what emerges from Forrester's book is her fundamental inability to fulfill this role; having suffered mental difficulties through her childhood and early adulthood, she experienced similar agonies, in spite of her dedication to the Bloomsbury cause. Many of Bloomsbury's controlling ideas on art, literature and their function in life come across as desperate attempts to make sense of a complex world struggling to adapt to profound change in the early twentieth century. The Bloomsburyites became even more frenzied in the aftermath of World War One, when it seemed that the old certainties governing the prewar artistic scene had been destroyed forever. Woolf became more and more conscious of the futility of her efforts, despite her success as a writer, which helps to explain her decision to take her own life once World War Two had broken out.One of the popular stereotypes about Bloomsbury is to characterize it as an artistic powerhouse of ideas embraced by Woolf, Roger Fry, Clive Bell, Maynard Keynes and others. This might be true, but Forrester's work suggests that such ideas might represent nothing more than strategies trying to make sense of the present in relation to the past; and ultimately failing in their stated purpose. Hence Woolf's increasing disillusion with the world around her.To be honest, Forrester's biographical speculations sometimes tend to run away with her, prompting readers to skip certain sections of the book and focus on her conclusions instead. But VIRGINIA WOOLF: A PORTRAIT contains sufficient penetrating insights to offer us a sympathetic picture of the author.

I have being reading Virginia Woolf and virtually al the books about her for over thirty years. This is easily the most illuminating, even startling book there is about her extraordinary life. It is, amazingly, full of new insights. The author has read everything and her use of sources is resourceful and creative.
