This book was an easy read that provides a highly effective way to manage your time, energy, and relationship with others. It is very relevant in today's environment of "being on 24/7", always being tied to your phone, and having many demands come at you at once. The book shows an "easy to understand" way to manage through this - although not always as "easy to follow".
I remember being a kid and learning to play Othello. On the box was the slogan "A Minute to Learn...A Lifetime to Master!" (Now, I think the Othello slogan is "Reversi without batteries!" but I digress.) That slogan applies well to the 5 Gears concept.First, of course, one should go out and learn to drive a stick shift. That helps the book make more sense.Overall: like most business/leadership books, the length is doubled by testimonials and case stories. That's okay, because these flesh out how the principles worked in individual lives. If you are a facts-without-stories person, skip them. The book reads faster that way. But then you'll miss some good inspiration along the way.The principles are drawn from the image of a stick-shift, and how there are times we need to be working through the gears of life to make progress. If we try and start out in fourth gear, we stall out.One thing I especially liked was how Kubicek worked to draw out differences in how this looks for introverts and extroverts. Obviously, a book has to be broadly-aimed and use some generalizations, but this helped narrow a few points for my use.I'd highly recommend this book, especially for those trying to work in an unstructured environment.
It only takes a few minutes to understand how the Gears work but this is a concept that will take a lifetime to master. I suspect I won’t regret any effort I put towards intentionally using this in my life, not to mention how everyone around me will benefit. I’m impressed how Kubicek and Cockram manage to distill such a critical and timely concept into such a simple and profound metaphor. This book was a pleasure to read and I especially enjoyed the many stories and examples. I loved seeing how people lives were impacted by this concept. I like it when a book speaks to both professional and personal aspects of my life. I highly recommend this book to everyone, from the home suite to the C-suite.
I cannot recommend this book enough. The simplicity of the concept quickly made me more aware of the importance of being in the right gear at the right time. It has paid dividends at home and work and continues to influence my approach to working with others. Effectively connecting wtih others is much harder to do in practice than it seems given our task oriented culture. 5 Gears provides you a framework to easily understand each gear from recharging (1st gear) to being in the zone (5th gear) and how to shift effectively from one gear to the next. Buy this book today, and it can help make difference for you by tomorrow!
Okay book, but hardly any real a-ha moments. It really takes common human interaction principles and forces them into five gears. This might work for folks who like to compartmentalize their lives, but I found it to be a bit trite. I read upwards of 20 business books each year, and this one is n the bottom 10%. Again, not because it is bad, but because it is too try-hard for me.
5 Gears is simple, scale, and sustainable concept. It is a compelling metaphor for how to create work/life balance and manage your time more effectively. I've read countless books on leadership but this book is different. It offers a practical and highly relevant framework that works for busy leaders. As a leadership blogger, this book has transformed my habits and helped me become both present and productive at the same time. This is a must-read book for anyone who wants to grow as an emotional intelligent leader.
A simple concept that is easy to remember, but harder to implement than it looks. I loved the simplicity of the 5 Gears....learning to shift through each of the gears each day. The visual is always in my mind. And, after reading this book, implementing the concept with my own family, and seeing how well it works, I wanted to learn more. Behind the simple one page graphic of the 5 Gears are 70,000+/- words that help me to understand the complexity of implementing this tool in a specific way throughout all areas of my life. What started as something that I looked at and went "that's interesting, and easy to remember" has now turned into a passion for me of buying this book as gifts for everyone I know because I want them to reap the benefits too. Perhaps most surprising to me has been how quickly children pick up the concept. In a world where children are practically born tethered to an electronic device at birth, I love seeing a book that teaches them the power of a balanced life and learning how to shift through all the gears needed for them to remain productive and whole human beings.
