From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 6. This entrancing book allows 14 artists who illustrate books for children to present themselves through both art and words. Representing the Hispanic, Black, Asian-American, Jewish, and Native American experiences, the contributors discuss important moments in their lives and how they became artists. Each double-page spread is composed of a full-page self-portrait opposite an explanation of the picture and a photograph of the subject as a child and at present. A list of the authors' titles published by Children's Book Press concludes the book. This is a wonderful browsing item as well as an excellent teaching tool for those who want to approach their students with the idea that we can communicate with both pictures and words. Both media are legitimate, and they work beautifully in tandem, as this book so beautifully testifies.?Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WACopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I've used this as a resource for teaching elementary generalist and visual arts pre-service teachers about incorporating culturally sensitive art experiences into their curricula. The book is an absolute favorite. in fact, at least three copies have 'walked out' of my library or become too worn out to use, due to students borrowing my copies for practicum teaches. I highly recommend as a teaching resource for students from k-12 - (Yes, even high schoolers find it inspiring).
Fun to know more of one of the artists, Elly Simmons. I am a collector of her fine art, Elly has works that will appeal to everyone.
I use this book and Honoring Our Ancestors: Stories and Paintings by Fourteen Artists by the same publisher, as a first-week activity in my 5th/ 6th classroom. We create self-portraits of ourselves and/ or family, and this book really helps because some of the paintings are abstract and aren't necessarily "traditional" face portraits. My kids love hearing the stories and I read them while they work on their own.I've had many kids remind me throughout the year of stories they remember about the artists, and many are inspirational because the artists came from a variety of backgrounds.
Very thoughtful little book. Excellent information, clearly written. Good for starting a discussion.
I teach elementary art at a special needs school, and I bought this book on the advice of one of my colleagues. I plan to use it at every grade level for a self-portrait unit. The stories that accompany the illustrations will provide for the students additional insights into each artist's work and technique.
This book is perfect for my K-6 instructional needs in the Art room.
The book has some great layouts and colorful designs presentations. But... it is dated to the 1960's. I used the book with my students. It was great for studying portrait painting.
The Illustrations that accompany each inspiring story are large and clear. I highly recommend it for any age. Love it.
