If you are a man or know a man this book is a must. I originally bought the first edition in high school back in early 2000, and i was impressed so much that i decided to apply a lot of what i learned. this book really helped me out, especially when i was in college trying to balance my social life with work and school. among a few things i learned that i often get kudos for in my adult life that i can credit the book with are basic skills for mixing drinks, hosting gatherings, and grooming standards.

This is the wittiest, funniest, savviest collection of observations on how to be an effective male in the twentieth first century you can find. Don't confuse this vast smorgasbord of essays on everything from wine, dating, music choice, sex, in-laws, kink, and clothes with the kind of pseudo-cool yet actually uptight advice you'd find in GQ or similar post-frat boy rags. Practical and highly amusing at the same time.

What do you know? My little brother actually enjoyed reading something and he actually learned a few lessons. A good book to read if you don't have a lot of large time chunks and just need little readings to pass the time.

Light-hearted but true seeds of wisdom abound in the pages of this book. I read the first edition and can honestly say it impacted my journey through my 20s. I think every guy could gain a little guidance by checking this one out.

First, it arrived on schedule and as described.Second, it's a great fun book to have around. Some things are a little inappropriate for a modest/conservative man but most of it is great fun knowledge. I bought one for each of my groomsmen as a little side gift after thumbing through mine.

Overall, there were some useful tips and guides. Some of the tips kind of jump around a bit, and the focus was more on single guys. I need one of these books for a married man. I would buy it again.

Better than other books on the subject. Updated for today.

Enjoyable & insightful - great gift for every young graduate tosome things are funny - some are true - some you will have to judge for yourself

Wow! What a tumultuous, righteous and satisfying conclusion to the series! I've been waiting so anxiously for this story and now that it's here, and, now, gone, I am a mix of emotions. I'm sad to see it end, but oh so happy I was here to read it! The men in Lera's quint were some of my favorite fae characters, so frustrating, yet so complex, real, yet fantastical. Lera herself was such a study in human weakness and strength, yet she is the glue that holds them all together and makes them a stronger crew for it. They've had to overcome trials, darkness and betrayal and here it is, the time to confront their foes once more. Such a lovely and epic conclusion to the series. I look forward to more stories featuring this crew, you know you can't make us really say goodbye, right?

This “final” of the series arc is interesting but I recommend that you read the earlier stories in the series first to better understand what’s going on. It’s not really a stand alone.I prefer a little more logic and continuity in my fiction, whether it’s romance, mystery or scifi - the characters and action have to make sense in the world the author has created. This book has creativity, but the least quality of the series. As for myself, that frail breakable human is going to be d-e-a-d if a 700 lb tiger crashes into her - her head will crack like a watermelon. If he sits on her, her rib cage will collapse. If she’s really sturdy, it will just compress her rib cage so her lungs can’t expand to take in air. So, didn’t work for me, even though I’m glad Lera and Tye finally bonded.Be aware that, while the series is listed as reverse harem, this has the most sex of the books. The episodes that the author proposes for future books make even less sense to me, so I won’t be pursuing this further.

Love, love, love this series. Devoured this book, then read it again. Tye is pulling away, as he calls for the final trial. They need to head to Slait, it is time for River to take control and put a stop to his father. The trial forces Lera to lead. While they succeed. Lera is badly hurt. Tye blames himself. They gain a friendship with Viper's quint who was their opponent.Their trip to Slait, is hard on Lera still healing body. Shade's healing can only do so much. Cole's takes the pain from her, guilt is compounded, when she is worse later. Tye continues to pull away and slips into his tiger, who has taken an interest in Lera. Things come to a head with Tye and Lera. Wise Shade, forces Tye to fix things.Slait becomes a waiting game. Lera has the time to fix things with Cole. River father is a step a head and take River, Cole and Shade. Tys's tiger the only reason he and Lera are still free. Autumn is sure she has has figured out her father's plan. Tye, Lera, Kora and her quint head to the place of Tye's birth, Blaze, as Autumn sends an alert to the Council. The attack comes before they are prepared. The Council is trying to help and sends Viper's quint to lend aid. To save Blaze and the rest of Lunos, Lera and her quint will have to sacrifice themselves.Loved Tye's mom and sister.Fast paced and steamy story. A great ending, loved it, very satisfying, but can't help to still want more. I loved Lera and her males. I want more of their happy ending, see how their lives unfold.I had already pre-ordered this book. I was lucky enough to receive and advance copy and am voluntarily leaving my review.Release day up date!Just had to read again. So happy to hear that there will be more stories from Lunos. Can't wait for the Great Falls Academy. I love the episode novella idea.

I fell in love with The Power If Five listening to the first book on Audible. The voices were perfect and it truly helped me developed a love ❤️ for this story. Lera is definitely one of a kind. She had to be to be able to handle such varying personalities from her men. I loved that we got to know Tye more in this book.Understanding why he is the way he is and how he came to be that way. Lera also has gotten stronger as tome has gone on. Not just physically but her will. Her 💗 for the guys made her stronger. Always looking for ways to make things easier for them. So selfless in her 💕 for them. The fact that she became Fae in the end was awesome. I was going to really be pissed 😤 if she’d died. After everything if she had died I would have given this book 5 stars but only wrote pissed. In bold capital letters. Now. Now I rave about my love for the quint. And be happy. Can’t wait for the novellas.

I really struggled with rating this book because while the sex scenes are good and the character progression is there the plot is lacking. The 700 pound tiger is going to kill a normal person if he sits on them. Also in the final trial the opposing team didn't have anymore surrenders so how is it that they were alive to help at the end of the book? It also felt like this was two books squished into one. The other books were much better.

328 pages388 pages including referencesReading In The Brain: The New Science Of How We Read by Stanislas Dehaene, published in 2009 by Penguin Books, has several potential audiences that could glean truly interesting and potentially useful information from this book. One audience might be Lexile Historians. Dehaene provides copious amounts of details on how cultures have evolved from simply reading the landscape, to drawing images in caves, to the first alphabet written by the Greeks, and so on. How the spoken languages have evolved through various cultures, leading English to be one of the most challenging to speak and spell, seemingly only behind the Chinese, who memorize over 3,000 images to this day.Neurologists (or neurologists-in-training) could also benefit from information provided in this Dehaene’s book. Descriptions of the areas of the brain utilized for reading and writing (spoiler: prefrontal cortex & occipito-temporal region) are provided, explaining how brain formation and development, sometimes at a later age, (check out the chapter on dyslexia!) influence the human ability to recognize letter sounds, followed by the letters themselves, the morphemes, and eventually entire words. We learn about the areas that are linked to facial recognition as well, and how that is linked to reading. In some stages, both hemispheres of the brain play a large role in reading skills, but eventually, one hemisphere takes on a larger responsibility as children are exposed to more and more. The “Letterbox” portion of the brain must be exposed enough to reading to be fully developed at the inception of adolescence in order for the child to be deemed an “expert” in reading. The brain’s function with reading and simple recognition changes over time, and Dehaene provides thorough descriptions of those transformations. Finally, teachers of reading (parents and licensed educators alike) are final benefactors of information in this book. Chapters 4-7 are primary areas of interest for this particular audience, where we learn a bit more about the evolution of writing and reading across cultures, with highlights on several languages and their simplicities or complexities in teaching reading and writing. As an educator, I found the most valuable information in a chapter entitled “Learning to Read.” Dehaene highlights the “Three Steps for Reading,” which are “logographic”-recognizing images, phoneme recognition, and grapheme recognition. It’s important to understand how a child’s brain develops-in that order-in order for them to learn to recognize letters accurately and eventually begin to form words and be able to sound out new ones. Children who are exposed to more speaking and reading at younger ages are more likely to avoid dyslexia, and overall struggles with reading comprehension and verbal processing. We must take our time in teaching children to decipher phonemes & graphemes if we expect them to eventually become fast(er) readers & writers; we cannot rush the process. The most interesting chapter to me was the chapter on Dyslexia-an area which I am very inexperienced with as an educator. Many people with dyslexia also have speech issues, which could be one of the first noticeable red flags for children. The author stresses that no set amount or type of factors play into a diagnosis of dyslexia, but it is predictable based on the parents and genetics, though other factors can play a part. It is also treatable with intensive interventions over the course of several weeks, bringing participants in a study up a few levels of readiness versus where they were prior to the interventions.Cons of the book: This particular reader (me) found some of the content to be bone dry and difficult to get through, primarily due to the heaviness of the material and general lack of interest in the topic.Pros: Plenty of development facts are published in this book, which could truly be a large help in understanding child brain development, and how the brain works when it comes to reading and writing. There is likely something in this book for any of the three audiences previously mentioned, and likely others as well.Fun facts learned:-The eyes move constantly while reading because the fovea, a small part of the cornea, helps to interpret & process.-Our gaze can advance 7-9 letters ahead.-It can take 50 milliseconds to process a word.-Most good readers can read 400-500 words per minute.-Font type influences speed at which we can read.-What we see depends on what we think we’re seeing.-Words take longer to read if they have more graphemes, not necessarily phonemes.-The right hemisphere is linked to facial recognition; the left is linked with reading & writing.-Reading improves verbal memory.-The Literate Mind: spelling mastery, richness of vocabulary, nuances of meaning, pleasures of literature.-Italian is the easiest language to learn (as a child, at least.)Bottom line: This entire book may not be for everyone, but there are portions that anyone could benefit from. It is worth a read, even if you don’t read the whole book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a topic in which I am very interested. Dr. Dehaene wrote a thorough, in-depth, and compelling book. He points out that the area of the brain by which we read was a product of evolution but had evolved for an entirely different purpose other than reading. He makes this statement based on when reading emerged in human culture. A period of time that is too short for evolution to have developed writing. Instead, he shows that reading and writing were processes that were invented by man. Of course, the area of the brain, which is the same area for all human beings regardless of their culture, Was "recycled" for the use of this new and novel invention of man. Dr. Dehaene relates how neuroscience identified and traced the circuits involved in reading via an ever progressing imaging machines. Each evolution of imaging machine gave faster, richer, and more detailed results as to which neurons were firing during reading and more accurate locations in the brain. I found this to be a fascinating journey and literally devoured the material.

i first came across dehaene's name in george lakoff's "where mathematics come from" -- and picked up his earlier number sense book. this book is in my opinion much more substantial -- he has been a researcher in this area for a long time, it seems, and he is very literate in the subject -- he provides a deep consideration of the neural correlates of reading, provides a coherent statement of what he calls neural recycling to explain how the brain adopts for reading across cultures, provides an in-depth exploration of dyslexia, and has a very profound vision of the place of neuroscience in education. he writes extremely well -- which is particularly impressive given that his original language is french. moreover, he has a breath of knowledge of language that goes beyond well english -- even pinker seems to be a professor of english. he makes reference to tomassello which impressed me no end since i wouldn't expect that breath of literacy from a neuroscientist. it provided me with everything i could have wished for, except for the field to be further along. i would not just recommend this book, but the author. i think before his career reaches its twilight, he will have contributed greatly both to neuroscience and its communication to the educated layperson.

di\gestible modern neuroscience--i am recommending to friends and relatives

"Reading in the Brain" is a nicely written book that offers a lot of insight in the different aspects of this sophisticated proces, the (biological) obstacles that may accompany it and our history as reading beings. The author illustrates his knowledge with many amusing examples, anecdotes, quotes and very interesting facts about, for instance, the spelling of languages and our coping with its limitations etc. Dehaene really covers a lot -too much to sum up- and so far all the critical questions that I, a linguistics student, asked myself were answered as well. And even if I doubted sometimes, it remains very insightful still. Each chapter has been well-divided into many small chunks of text, which makes the information clearer and easier to grasp and not so hard to keep up. The language used is quite academic (because scientific), but once one's interest is drawn I think anyone can learn a lot from this book.

Having a degree in Marine Biology, I found some of the information in the book to be a bit of "common sense"..... Or so I thought. But when I began teaching college biology to nonmajors, I realized that this book can really light those students up. Blue Mind really got some of my students excited about the oceans and ecology, engaged at greater levels with the endocrine system and hormones, gave them a better idea of anatomy and physiology, and most importantly, I think, showed my students that science is relevant NOW, and to them. Dr. Nichols is a great example of a scientist and advocate to a generation of young adults who are just waiting for his messages!

I always knew there was something special about living on an island, surrounded by the calming sounds of lapping waves. This book explains it.Nichols writes that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water. He combines water science and neuroscience to show exactly that. He defines the “blue mind” as a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life. It is inspired by water and the sensations associated with it. “...[W]ater provides the most profound shortcut to happiness out there.”He explores our emotional ties to water, explains the technology of brain study, contemplates what happiness is and how it is evaluated, looks at the affect of the color blue and the other sensations of water. He explores the recreational use of water and the health benefits of water, including its therapeutic use for PTSD, drug addiction and autism. He explains the Red Mind and the Gray Mind – enlightening.Blue Mind is not a dry science book. Nichols includes lots of stories as examples of his thesis. Some of the findings are subjective and anecdotal and the stories help illustrate them. The application of Nichols' book is broad, all the way from health benefits to urban planning. He is also concerned about the future of water and ends his book with a reminder of our emotional attachment to it and the need to make sure it is there for the future. Now I know why there are aquariums in waiting rooms and why you should put a small one on your work desk. I know what it means if someone gives me a blue marble. I also now know the science behind why I love the water so much, especially the beaches of my island home.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

After reading this book, don't walk, but race to the water!Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed 'J' for our Inspire Nation Show.I love this book, and I can't get enough of it! I admit, I'm a water-aholic. I learned to swim before I could walk. I've always take the opportunity to jump into the water...even in the cold. And I've always loved to ride my bike, run, walk, or drive near the water, I can't get enough of it. And now I understand why. This book is a powerful treatise to understand our connection with this magical blue stuff....it makes up the water, it makes up the sky, and it makes up us...we're over 70% water ourselves, the same exact makeup of the ocean. This is one beautiful book, and the work 'J' has done to bring water to our minds, and to help save the sea-turtles, is beyond commendable. I cannot recommend this book enough; except when given a choice between reading and heading to the water...put down the book, and head for the water...you'll thank yourself for it!

If you live near the ocean like me or just enjoy vacationing along its shores or those of lakes and rivers, this book explains our enchantment with everything water and why we love to play in it or just gaze upon its beautiful reflective surface. Wallace Nichols spends a lot of time in the water and has brought together the latest research about how earth's bodies of water may be used not only for fitness and recreational purposes, but also for the healing of the body, mind and spirit. The book is interlaced with enlightening stories about people with physical and emotional issues whose lives were changed through spending time in water and also just breathing the air close to large bodies of water. He also exposes many environmental problems that require our attention to preserve the health of earth's water features for the preservation of future generations, both human and non-human species.

Nichols covers a lot of ground, er, water in this book. From the physiology of our watery selves to finding one's happiness, Nichols' book describes our many and varied relationships with water. It motivated this reader to seek out more ways to interact with water and live more in the blue mind.

Wallace J. Nilchols has written an important and inspiring book about why our connection to water and especially the ocean is important for our physical, emotional and cognitive health. As a conservationist, this book is important to me to help to explain to the general public why investing in the protection and restoration of our open aquatic spaces as well as making sure we have access to them, is an urgent priority. Anyone who cares about nature and our nature-deficit disorder should read this book. And then you must teach others what you have learned. I am grateful to Dr. Nichols for the years of research that went into this groundbreaking work and his passion for spreading the message of why we need water. And as the wife of a surfer with two surfer sons who are also ocean lifeguards I know that for our family's happiness, contact with our ocean is an absolute must.Emily H.
