I'm thinking this will be my favorite-ever Karen Kingsbury book. Karen has applied her steady-paced, heart-tugging storytelling to Gospel history.In this book, she focuses on Jesus' earthly family: Joseph, the man who raised him. Mary, the girl who gave birth to the fulfillment of Prophecy. James, his brother who struggled. John the Baptist, his cousin who prepared the way for him. His Aunt Elizabeth and his Uncle Zechariah, who were waiting, and working and hoping.Karen's writing sparked my imagination. I could picture the scenes as they unfolded. Zechariah, struck dumb in a temple room saturated with incense and awe. Mary watching an old man cradle her baby and proclaim that he can now die, for he has seen his salvation. John The Baptist's entry into Truest Life by the blade of a decapitating sword. James, finding out that his brother is God. Mary, trying to soothe the wounds on her Son's dead body, preparing Him for burial in a donated tomb.It's really amazing to think that family is so important to God that His Son needed to be raised within its cocoon. Jesus had a family and all that comes with it. The laughing and tears and suppers together and quiet early mornings where all the people you most love sleep under this one roof. Arguments between siblings and deep bonds and shared grief and family reunions where the conversation picked up exactly where it has been left off last year, Jesus experienced it all.This is really a great little book. It was an uplifting, soothing read for me one afternoon, and I think it would make an excellent gift for a new Christian, male or female. You could say "Here, as you navigate your way around the Gospels, this is novelized six stories to help you meet the main characters."Thank you Howard Books for my Review Copy.
The Family of Jesus by Karen Kingsbury offers a fictional view of six of the family members of Jesus (Mary, Joseph, Jesus’ brother James, John the Baptist, Zechariah, and Elizabeth), all anchored by Scriptural truth, creating a life-changing and unprecedented emotional connection to the Bible.I was really excited to read The Family of Jesus by my friend, Karen Kingsbury. At first, I was a little skeptical as I know how I feel about fictionalizing Bible stories, but I felt Karen nailed it! Karen begins the book with a reader letter. I felt her heart and motive in writing this book and this really set me at ease and allowed me to fall in love with the story.I normally do not cry in books, but Karen really pulled a heartstring when she wrote about Joseph. The Bible does not give us a lot of details about Jesus’ earthly father. This is where the fiction came in and Karen took what we do know and then tried to imagine if it could happen. What would it have been like to be Joseph? Imagine what it would have been like, in that time period, to be Joseph and the girl you are to marry comes and says, “I am pregnant.†Joseph knew it was not his baby. Now think of how you would react to Mary saying, “this baby is from God.†Of course, Karen tells it better than my brief example, but I never took the time to think about what really might have gone through Joseph’s head as he heard this news. We are told in the Bible that he wanted to divorce Mary.As I read this whole story, I fell in love with the characters in the Family of Jesus. In fact, these are individuals in my family and in the family of Christians. Karen took me to a place I did not know existed as I felt like I got to know these individuals on a personal level. Of course, this is not the Bible. There are parts that are fiction and parts that are Scriptural truths. I think it is important to read a book like this, with discernment and prayer, but when I allowed myself to let get lost in the story and then evaluate what I just read, that was when the book really came alive.I think this is one of Karen’s best books yet and I am excited to see how God uses it in the lives of those who read it.I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.
I just finished THE FAMILY OF JESUS by Karen Kingsbury and I must say what an AMAZING book!!! From the first page in her letter to her readers to the last page, you are drawn into The Family of Jesus. We all know the characters...Joseph, Zechariah, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, James, and Mary. But, Karen tells a story, like no other, taking us deeper into the lives of these beloved Bible family members of Jesus. You get a glimpse into what their lives were like, their conversations, their feelings...joys, heartaches, etc. And their one connection throughout each of their stories... Jesus. And after each short stories, you are directed to a page number towards the back of the book, where Karen has written six Bible studies on each of the characters. This is a book that you will read again and again and it will lead you to pick up your Bible.A truly emotional, heart-touching,and very vivid, life-changing detailed book that you will want to share with family and friends. And with every Karen Kingsbury book, have tissues nearby. THE FAMILY OF JESUS is a MUST READ!! Looking forward to the next book in this continued series.
