We are used to Rick Steve guides. This one is basic and not so helpful.We found Japan guide website much more helpful and invaluable to everything we did on our trip. Would skip this book.
Its okay and the concise topics and suggested itineraries are helpful. Needs more photos and the text size is way too small. Need magnifying glasses.
I bought this for my son for a trip to Japan, he stated that the map was a good resource while he was there.

This is an interesting and informative travel guide to Tokyo, Japan. Years ago I stopped over in Tokyo a few times during my transpacific flights. Each stopover was a day or two but I ventured into different districts so I had a pretty good idea of what Tokyo offered in terms of culture and sights. In reviewing this guide, I found myself enjoying its contents and thought it was pretty informative and inclusive in the districts that I had visited, such as the Imperial Palace, Akihabara, Roppongi and Shinjuku.The book begins with an informative introduction to Japan, which are the two first chapters: Experience Tokyo and A Japanese Culture Primer. They account for 1/3 of the book and are a good read to get yourself familiar with what Tokyo has to offer and the Japanese culture and way of life. The rest of the book covers the popular tourist districts in Tokyo as well as where to eat and sleep. The final chapter offers interesting side trips that you can make to the neighboring cities and areas.The guide does a pretty good job of covering the Tokyo, at least in the districts that I had visited. There are many suggestions on popular destinations including museums, shrines, gardens and other local attractions such as the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower as well as Mori Tower in Roppongi and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Shinjuku.If you consider eating, lodging, nightlife, performing arts and shopping as an important part of your travel plan, this guide has a lot to offer. There are separate chapters on those. You'll probably find something for everyone.If you are planning to visit neighboring cities and areas, you'll find some good ideas in this guide as well. There is a chapter on side trips to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (to climb Mt Fuji), Niko, Kamakura and Yokohama. There is also a section on essential Japanese phrases that will come in handy.One thing I found lacking is the maps. They are mostly local maps that are good for orientation but not detailed enough to find your own way to get there. Also, they are few and far between. I wish it would include a pull-out map that provides a bigger map with more details.Overall, this is a great resource for planning a trip to Tokyo as well as carrying with you for on-location references when you get there. It is informative and pretty comprehensive. I would suggest to get a large Tokyo map as well as a Tokyo Metro transit map that you can actually read (the one in the guide is tiny and unreadable). The Metro is the main form of transportation and it is one of the most complicated in the world. You'll need a good Metro map to bring with you since you probably may not find one in English at the stations.

What struck me most is the authors' You really sense the authors' love of and fascination with the city, as they take the reader behind the scenes in many of the areas top attractions and hidden secrets, with acknowledgment of contemporary Japanese whimsy and culture, as well as traditional culture and history. The guide starts with a overall description of Tokyo, with information on the top attractions, Japanese etiquette, and budget travel tips. It continues with a culture primer, describing fine arts, performing arts, martial arts, baseball, Sumo, the tea ceremony, religion, geishas -- all the things we Westerners associate with Japan but don't really know much about. (Well, other than baseball.). The remainder of the guide is devoted to What to See, Where to Eat, Where to Stay, Nighlife, Performing Arts, and Shopping. Then there is a section on side trip out of the city and basic information on the Japanese language.
