My biological specialty was microbiology, and I hated most of the botany courses I took. This book made me change my mind about the appeal of the subject. Not only is it enlightening, it is a joy to read. Some of my favorite lines are "This ancestor was the first land plant, and without it,...there certainly would be no Homo sapiens and no Oxford University Press and no Very Short Introduction to Plants" and "One of these [sperm] does the decent thing and finds an egg and makes an honest zygote out of it." A valuable intro to the subject; one warning: the author does not shy away from using the appropriate technical terms, so if you want simplistic, this is not your book.

I downloaded this book because it's been a loooooong time since I had biology or botany in college and I wanted a review and update. This book is excellent--just enough information but not so much that it belabors the point. Probably a bit over the head of a rank beginner, but if you've had any biology or botany education in the past (even distant past), this book will quickly remind you of what you've forgotten and let you know what you need to look more deeply into. Also, I love the author's sense of humor! Very enjoyable reading!

A scientific little book, small print, very packed with information. A dandy introduction to the world of plants and much more thorough than you would expect when you see this tiny volume! Also good for the person who doesn't want a college class in plants, yet has an interest in the development of the plant world, it's differentiation, and it's spread.

I had high hopes for this book when I ordered it, but it turns out to be disappointing. Although the author (and the other reviewers so far) seem to think that this is an introduction, it isn't really. The author assumes a lot of botanical and biological language that is, alas, opaque to 90% of normal readers. The book needed an ordinary human as an editor. We are plunged into "gametophyte" and "monophyletic" from the beginning. There are explanations of these terms, but you need a familiarity with botany to keep going, and if you have a familiarity already, what is the point of an Introduction? The most complicated thing to get your head around, the sort of pons asinorum (the crossing line into the subject) is getting the complicated plant life cycles firmly into your head, but the author does a terrible job of this, and there are no diagrams. Again, there are great things in this book, I learned a lot of interesting bits and pieces, but then I know some botany. You need to go elsewhere if you want to get into the topic from the beginning.

This is a wonderfully exciting narrative, written and published more than a century ago by a Klondike prospector who'd "been there, done that." It was probably not transcribed directly from a diary, but was certainly written soon after events, while memories were still fresh. The author briefly prospected for gold in the Cripple Creek mountains of Colorado, following which he and his partner joined the mad stampede and hazardous trek over Chilkoot Pass, thence down the Yukon River to the Klondike gold field. The original publication was seemingly scanned using optical character recognition, resulting in occasional typographical errors, which are easy to ignore. The author writes in a highly literate manner, and the text is very well edited. The story comes across as interesting and as exciting as the best fictional portrayal of that era (i.e., James Michener's "Alaska" and others)--and is a good example of truth at times being stranger than fiction. This book will be of serious interest to the historian, and is also an exciting page-turner. Highly recommended!

Written as a diary of his life and his two years in the Yukon. Makes you feel as if you were there with him. Many technical details and stories of others who were there. Removes the hype and unrealistic romance of the Klondike gold rush. A must read for anyone going to Alaska or the Canadian Northwest Territories. Makes one realize that no matter how much technological change we've had since the 1890's, people haven't really changed. The Stars TV mini-series did not use much from Haskell' s book except his name. Too bad since his real story would have been much more interesting.

I purchased this book for my dad who loves to read about gold rushes of any kind. I couldn't pry this book out of his hands. He said he felt like he was living through through the Klondike. While I did not read the book, I did skim through the preface, written by a history professor at University of Alaska. If you read the book, I would recommend the preface as it gives some background information relative to the period and genre of book. I would have liked to know more about how the book was received after it was published--was it a best seller at the time (1898), what happened to William Haskel?

Great book !! so well written and full of actual information about a fascinating time in Alaskan history. If you enjoy books showing man's determination to succeed against all odds this is a book to read.

This is a great story of Alaska and all true to boot, tells of the problems of looking for gold in the Klondike at the turn of the 1900s.

Informative about the Klondike gold rush.

I loved FOR A MUSE OF FIRE, esp because Jetta the main character is so messy, and flawed, and makes bad decisions in the moment. She feels slightly dangerous in the way I was when I was a teenager. I thought what I was doing was right a lot of the time, but I did things in the moment that were such bad choices. Jetta does the same, using her blood magic to trap souls in her shadow puppets, and exposing herself and family to incredible dangers. I also love that her queerness is up front right along with being bipolar.Long story short, we have a colonizing army/ a theater troupe trying to escape a war/ a diverse cast you just want to hang out with / a refugee crisis that is such a reflection of our own world / a rebellion against the colonizers / love/ family/ blood magic!!!And I love that she lives in this rich world, and we get to visit this world. I love that Heilig doesn't shy away from showing us the real world, and makes real political stands, and it's all in service to an incredible story. I really liked her first two time travel stories in The Girl From Everywhere, but FOR A MUSE OF FIRE is such a leap in craft, and world building, and storytelling. I really love this book.

Heidi Heilig is a viruosic writer who can tug at feelings as deftly as her heroine, Jetta, tugs at her shadow puppets. Not in a cheap way, but with depth that will leave you thinking about the story for weeks to come.This was true with THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE and the SHIP BEYOND TIME; it's as true--even truer--with FOR A MUSE OF FIRE. Heilig writes an elegant first person narrator while drawing point of view from other characters via script and stage directions, letters, and even music. Legitimate songs, with musical notation, that makes me itch to get out my flute. (I will, too!!) And she handles it all elegantly, seamlessly. It all adds to the feeling of being immersed in an existing world.And of course, most importantly--complex characters that catapult their way through a story that is not only gorgeously written and deeply moving, but un-put-down-able. Jetta is absolutely arresting.Honestly, I don't know how she does it. I'll preorder Heidi Heilig's books whenever I can, forever.

I've read Heidi Heilig's other works, and was desperately hungry for the release of this novel. Heilig writes exciting fiction that draws you into emotional attachment to the supporting cast as well as the protagonist, and makes for well crafted antagonists that keep you guessing.In each of their books, Heilig has brought diversity, social stratification, and alliance building into focus. Characters see their past charted realistically and with fulfilling depth, and no character is thrown aside as one note for the sake of simplicity or a joke. Villians exist beyond the scope of their evil plots, and have motives that are reasonable. Each protagonist across books express a struggle with in-betweeness of cultures/lifestyles they want to and have to inhabit. Powers and talents mirror the liminality in such a satisfying way, showing such creativeness. Anything Heilig writes that feels formulaic isn't lazy or dull, it is perfected craft and care for appealing to the reader.My favorite thing about their writing is how fresh the climaxes feel. I find myself thrown by how much has built up over the course of the story and slightly anxious about how the ending will resolve in the fifty odd pages left. Each book has proven Heilig knows what they are doing, and the conclusions are deeply satisfying.I recommend this book wholeheartedly! I don't know if it is planned to be part of a series or not (need to up my fan level) but I feel it sufficiently stands alone while also could happily be book one of ten.

Heidi has done it again. Once again I found myself lost in the pages of her book. I turned the last page and found myself craving book 2. Not only did For a Muse of Fire catch my attention from the first pages, it kept me interested through to the very last sentence. The use of dialog and music interspersed throughout the book was a fun way to break up the reading. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Heidi Hielig does it again. This is the book I needed as a teen, with mental health prominent in a fantasy world. I’m recommending this to everybody.

It took me a while but I finally finished Donald Kraybill's The Upside-Down Kingdom. Kraybill is Distinguished College Professor, and Senior Fellow of Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, which is a pretty impressive title, at least for its length, and one of the foremost experts on Anabaptism and especially the Amish in the world. The Upside-Down Kingdom (UPK for short) is not a book on Anabaptism per se but rather a look at the way that Christ's Kingdom is in every respect the exact opposite of what the world values. Up is down, great is least.UPK is a fascinating book and challenging to boot. Some of the background information that Kraybill shares is absolutely incredible and really fleshes out portions of Scripture. He does a great job of drawing out from Scripture some crucial points regarding status, power, wealth, etc. that we take for granted and showing the reader where we have strayed far from the intent of Scripture. It is a pretty devastating indictment of our traditional church culture in the West and should make any open-minded Christian ask some serious questions and take a deep introspective look. There are a few slow points but the book as a whole flows beautifully and reads easily while still be meaty.That isn't to say that I don't have concerns. I do with every book but UPK has some issues that are especially concerning. First Kraybill seems pretty comfortable with traditional church structures. He certainly has criticisms of them but he seems to miss in places that the very traditions we cling to in many ways hamper living as citizens of the Upside-Down Kingdom. He also takes great liberties in assigning motivations and emotions, especially to Christ, that are absent from the text. What Jesus, the eternal God, is thinking in a situation is not a topic I am comfortable making definitive statements about.My bigger concern has to do with how Christ is represented and how His cross is understood. The language about the deity of Christ and the relationship between God the Father and God the Son is a bit sloppy and imprecise. Someone could read this book and perhaps get the impression that God is the Father is God and that Jesus is something less than God. His treatment of the cross is even more troubling. Statements like this for example... "...Jesus demolished the entire sacrificial system when he announced full forgiveness, direct from God - any time, any place without a bloody sacrifice." (The Upside-Down Kingdom, pg. 248)Kraybill seems to be saying that the sacrificial system was overturned symbolically and finally when Jesus overturned the money changers tables in the temple and that the cross is primarily the result of the social unrest caused by a life of radical service. The problem is that this is doesn't match Scripture which tells us that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb 9:22) and that Jesus brought peace between man and God by His shed blood on the cross (Col 1:20). So there are certainly some places where red flags popped up in an otherwise outstanding book.So in summary I would absolutely recommend The Upside-Down Kingdom to most Christians but I would add a note of caution. Read with your eyes (and Scriptures!) wide open and be discerning in places where Kraybill starts to stray from orthodox teachings. I would caution a newer believer who is not solidly grounded in the Bible to be very cautious here. Perhaps read in the context of a study group UPK would work but I would be concerned that a new believer would miss some of the red flags I saw. I don't want to give the impression that this is not an outstanding book because it absolutely is and one I highly recommend. Just read with caution, which is good advice for any book!

"The Upside-Down Kingdom" by Donald B. Kraybill is an excellent book challenging all Christians to radically live out the Sermon on the Mount and other teachings of Jesus Christ. Mr. Kraybill, a sociologist and Christian of Anabaptist/Mennonite background, correctly and lovingly challenges Christians to abandon the philosophies of this world in order to accurately represent the Kingdom of God on earth.The Upside-Down Kingdom shows that the Kingdom of God really is opposed to any worldly system of thinking or government. To win, you must lose. To live, you must die. To gain, you must live. Every one of Christ's commands are the direct opposite of those taught by the leading thinkers of the world. If Christians are to impact their generation for the Kingdom of God we must start living like true ambassadors of the Kingdom.I give this book four starts because I thought it was slightly repetitive at points and not quite as conservative in some of its views as I would have liked. The main instance of this is when the author contrasts the Greek definitions of "love" in a way that I think stretches sound exegesis. This is common in modern evangelicalism but is really not as significant as Mr. Kraybill would have us believe. However, this book is still a great, easy read and will certainly challenge those who want to live like Jesus did.

In order for us to have a clear understanding the theology of Kingdom we have to know who Jesus are without any cultural, theological, spiritual, or philosophical assumptions, or what the author calls detours around Jesus. We have to know Him from his own story and words. Therefore, Kraybill's the theology of Kingdom is based on the story of Jesus Christ and centered on His ministry. He provides a biblical framework for understanding the kingdom.The author calls the Kingdom that Jesus preached the upside down kingdom of radically different principles and values, because its realization stands in contrast to the common ways of this world. The king of this Kingdom is God (the author uses Jesus sometimes), and its principle are Jubilees, Sabbath and Shalom that were insinuated in Jesus' words and message, and their main goal is to elevate men and women from the social, political, religious monarchal, economical labels or boxes to the level of siblings in the Kingdom. However, these principles contradict with the principles of the world. He explains that the political and religious power plays had drastic effects on the economic life of the majority poor. Therefore, Jesus himself has to face the three spheres of social power: politics, economics and religion.The author believes that Jesus teaching on kingdom is personal and realistic, and it is not to be lived aggregately but collectively. By personal, I mean that God rules in believer's heart and relationships to elevate them to a new status. By realistic I mean it could be applied to our live wherever and whenever human live. We can envision this in the church as assembly of people who are citizens of the Kingdom, and who adopt the idea and the values of the Kingdom in any culture they reside in. Because believers are, like any other human beings, social, they need a social structure to meet their needs and the needs of others. The church is the social structure that the values and culture of the Kingdom are practiced and passed on to others. Therefore, church as a "social vehicle" of the Kingdom culture uses its "servant structure" to accomplish Kingdom's mission, which is church's work. Its mission is to be the prophetic voice in the world against social discrimination, political oppression, religious scandals, and economic injustice according to God's purpose and will. In another level, the author criticizes the institutional church. He believes that Kingdom of God is above any place, nation, and culture. However, as the author get to the end of this point, he ultimately realized that we need to periodically evaluate the rule and purpose of its activities.Being from an Anabaptists background, the author articulates very well the Kingdom children's respond to the violent. Responding to violent with violent will naturally produce greater loss for both parties. A quick peak to the history, we will find that violent never solved problems. When we do not respond violently, we might think it is weakness, but according to Jesus Teaching it is power. Responding to violent with love serves many purposes. Firstly, we do not give the perpetrator what he or she intended by acting violently. Secondly, we teach the aggressor a lesson that some of them might not be familiar with. Thirdly, we are showing our ultimate obedience to our Master who commanded us to love our enemy. The author bases his argument on the principle of non-reciprocal love (agape). Agape is a love that does not expect something in return. It is like God's love for us.What Kraybill makes it clear is that the kingdom is not compromising to culture, powers or convenience; rather, its main goal is to transform them. The only way to that is through what he calls them the triple symbols, basin, cross, and tomb. The symbol of basin represents what is known recently by the servanthood leadership. Serving others without any regards to sex, nation, religion, and ethnicity is the core of the Kraybill's Kingdom Theology. This is not an easy task, because it will lead to the cross. But because we trust God, and we are accomplishing Kingdom's mission, the final word is for God. When the church adopts the triple symbol concept, its journey toward accomplishing its mission is not going to be a comfortable one.Looking at the political climate during the time, we will realize that the Jewish people were in desperately waiting for a king to liberate them from Romans. In the wilderness, Jesus had faced that temptation. He did not accept political authority that was offered to Him by the tempter. Instead, He chose to be a revolutionary. He was a revolutionary not in the Zealous type of rebel that used violence, but in violating Pharisees' laws and regulations that were above God's law, criticizing the false political tranquility of the Romans, and condemning the right-wing Sadducees lucrative temple operation. Serving others out of love was His policy. The second sphere that Jesus faced was religious power. The religious practice grew stale, empty, and lucrative. Jesus was tempted to reveal His Messianic secret to influence people to make a new movement or create a new religion. He might have struggled with this thought during His mission. Instead, again He preferred the role of the servant Savior. The third sphere was the economic power. Again and again Jesus preached against economic injustice that trampled the poor to benefit the rich. Jesus was tempted to use His power to feed the hunger and end the economic unjust. Instead, He chose to be the bread of life for all nations. His life, His way, and His teaching will form a new foundation of living.I read the book entirely, and I, without any doubt, can say that it is one of the most transforming books that I have read in English. It presents a universal theology of the Kingdom that could be applied to different contexts and understood in any given situation. The strengths of the Kraybill's theology of Kingdom is that it is a biblical theology, which could be applied to any church in any place in the world within their current context. Just as he provides context for the reader, he allows for contextual interpretation for those that wish to apply what they have learned from the text. And this might be the genius of this book. It never imposes context but rather exposes it. Moreover, the author incorporates his sociological education to bring to life in a very articulated and easy to understand language the historical, political, and social culture of the New Testament.My criticism of this book is that Kraybill seems to be ambivalent in his argument about the church. In one hand, he sees it as a servant structure for the Kingdom's mission. In the other hand, he does not seem happy with concept of the church. I believe that all human being's effort will fall short in living the faith. However, I also believe, that the church with all its shortcomings will remain the beloved bride of Christ. We cannot disvalue the rich meanings of the symbols of the church. At the same time, I agree with the author that we have to evaluate the meaning and purpose of these symbols periodically. The author also seems to accommodating from time to time for those who may yearn for personalized version of the Gospel of the kingdom and find this kind of interpretation repelling.The author theology fits best into the Anabaptist perspective of Church, State, and Public Justice. By taking Jesus words to heart, the church can become the prophetic voice in the community. Jesus called his disciples light and the salt of the world. Its mission is to add Kingdom's value and speak God's truth by loving the other and caring the community. The church already has a great deal of influence on people and communities' values. It is not expecting to benefit from this task financially, nor try to gain power over people whom she is serving. Rather to transform them to the image of Jesus. It is not going to be an accomplishable task. However, it is going to be an earthly time process. The test will show how faithful she will remain to her Master, "but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."

Frustrating reading. The black and white photos at time were too small and unclear. Their writing style all over the place. A how to book should be progressive and sequential.. step by step.. not oh yeah another thing. Get to the point, an outline possibly, then itemize step by step would have been appreciate it. Very disappointing but better than most of the other primitive authors that make a fun topic academic. Good try but this is their third book. They haven't figured it out yet? Update and get color photos with higher resolution and offer larger photos presented in sequence with the text.

It is not the ultimate guide to wilderness living. No mention of edible or medicinal herbs or of primitive first aid. It's a book with a new cover written by the authors way back in the 80s under the title of Wilderness Living and Survival Skills. The images aren't that good. The book is written in conversational style, i.e., occasional profanity and improper grammar. It's more of a primer for primitive living skills. I bought the Kindle version to have on my smart phone as a just in case. If you purchase both of Cody Lundin's books and books on edible and medicinal plants and the SAS survival book, you'll be okay. You'll still have to get out there in the backyard or woods and practice what is taught. Keep liquid Benedryl on you in case of a deadly alergic reaction to eating wild plants.

This is a pretty good no nonsense book on primitive living skills. The authors who seem to be kind of hippies actually lived in the wilderness for long periods and practiced the topics covered so they are speaking from experience rather than hypothetical situations. I like learning these primitive skills just because it impresses me the way people survived before modern conveniences. Some of the skills could certainly save your life if you were trapped in a wilderness survival situation, but not if you just read about them. I think actual practice applying the topics in this book would be essential to use them. I tried to make fire with primitive methods and it is not something you just do. The survival shows on TV make it look easy because they have obviously spent years perfecting the techniques they use. I think its worth adding to a outdoor camping/hiking/bush-craft library. The topics covered in this book are pretty well described and illustrations are decent. Hope this review is helpful.

I bought the original 'Naked into the Wilderness'almost 20 years ago. At that time it was the only book I had read that explained the skills in it to a level that allowed you to go out and successfully practice them.The photos might be showing their age but they are still more than capable of educating the reader on the basics of skills being shown.I applaud the McPhersons for making this book available to a wider audience. When I purchased the original through a local specialist bookshop I had to pay through the nose and wait months for it to arrive. When I purchased this new printing I paid a fraction of the price and got it in a two weeks!Now I can put my much loved, ragged, stained and worn original copy into retirement on the shelf and throw this shiny new copy into my pack for the next couple of decades.If you want to learn to survive in the wilderness with nothing, read this book then practice everything in it until you have successfully mastered each technique your way.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Get it!

This book covers majority of what you need to know in a survival situation where you are left with nothing but your survival skills. If you could buy just one book, this would be it. It goes into very nitty gritty details on aspects such as fire building, tools/weapons making, traps, shelters, pottery, etc. It would have been nice if they went into fishing but I guess you cant ask for it all. This book was well worth the money, and for a 1st time reader of a survival book or manual, this one did the trick.I only came upon this book because i was about to purchase a Tom Brown Jr. book but it said to look to this book instead because the TB jr. book doesn't go into details on how to make fires, traps, tools, etc. it's just stories on what he was able to do and is just a pre cursor to taking his survival courses which are very expensive. Just goes to show, it's not the most famous book or author that will provide you with what you need to know practically, I've found that in most cases.

This is a really great book! If I ever get lost in the wilderness, I hope that I happen to have this book on me! It is very detailed on how to make tools, or weapons, or shelters and tells you all the supplies needed to make these items. It also has some really detailed pictures to show how the weapon or tool looks over time as you build it. I would never want to have to survive on my own, but if I am to, I'm sure that with this book I'll be alright until I am found, or just live out that way. This is a great book to have if you enjoy traveling a lot especially out in places that you can get lost. Even if you don't travel much, it still has useful information in it to read about and to learn how to do.

Very detailed, very practical, information and guidance for long term basic, close to the earth living. The old time skills which are described in detail are very interesting and perhaps critical if you are going to live off the grid, way off the grid !. I admire these folks commitment to their chosen life style.

This is a good book. There is alot of good knowledge in it. The only thing that keeps it from being a truely great book is that it is illustrated with picture from the 60's or 70's. Purely black and white. Some updated color photos would be nice. Other than that it is a really good book. Authors seem to really know their stuff. Highly recommend this book to others
