"Innovative... A small but important step, if not toward peace, then perhaps toward understanding... Developed by a group of Israeli and Palestinian teachers, this text will prove useful not just to the young, but to anyone who quails at the thought of even attempting to unravel the knotty history of the Middle East."—Kirkus Reviews "The battle lines of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict extend to the classroom, where the two sides’ versions of their shared history diverge sharply. Now, two university professors aim to change the way the conflict is taught by exposing Palestinian students to Israeli history lessons and Israeli students to the Palestinian version of history.—USA Today

Very interesting perspective on the conflict presented in an innovative format. This book was for a class and it was my favorite out of all the books we used. It was fascinating to see the way narratives differ, and to get more of a personalized account of the conflict. I would recommend pairing this with the Very Short Introduction by Martin Bunton so you can get all the facts first, which should help you look critically at the narratives presented here. I would also recommend not always reading the Israeli narrative first (that is how the book is written). Switching what narrative you read first helps you make sure your thoughts aren't being affected by the order in which the information was presented -- very important if you're trying to be neutral.

It is interesting to read, and refer to, to see the parallels in history of the Arab Palestinians and Zionist/Israelis. You get some understanding as to who was living where (in the world), when, and how things changed, and can compare different points of view. I had not realized that the plan for Jews to "return" to Palestine had started in the 19th century by the Zionists, for instance.

I had to order this book for on honor's seminar on the Palestinian conflict. At first I was overwhelmed by the stories - a different side of the conflict is told on either side of the book. The left hand is the view point of Israeli, while the right hand is the view point of Palestinians. At first it is slow but the book picks up and if you are very knowledgeable or new to the conflict (as I was) you will like the book as long as you take the time to read it, and are interested in political/social/cultural affair. This book is not meant to be a text book. This book is not meant to be give one simple facts or to make one side look better or worse than the other. This book is meant to show the reader how the conflict may be analyzed by Israeli and Palestinian citizens - side by side. It is meant to give the reader an understanding of how this struggle came to be and how it has evolved over the years and the reason for the strife that exist between the two ethnic groups today.

This book is intended for students, but should be read by everyone, especially all those one-sided screamers and blamers that can be relied on to ruin any semi-sane discussion of the Palestinian issue by jumping in and repeating ad nauseam a few (often questionable) old claims that they think support their particular point view.Buy one and give it to your public library. It might just educate a few people--if they read both sides--as they are presented here by a team from both sides.

I really appreciated finding a book that went to such great lengths to present both perspectives regarding this conflict. I admire the authors for their collaboration. If you only read one book about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, this is it. It's one to reference over and over.

Extremely well laid out. It is fascinating to read these narratives side by side. I read this during my birthright trip. I felt so much more informed of the issues and people's feelings about them. This deeply enriched my experience and allowed me to have much more meaningful conversations with people on all sides of the spectrum.

I love the way this book is constructed. The side by side narratives from both the Palestinians and the Jews is a brilliant concept. For me, the histories given are sometimes a bit shallow. There are errors of fact from both sides, but I guess that's to be expected. I do think this book is worth reading. I believe that few people are well versed in the history of this land and this book will definitely help with understanding some of the issues surrounding the conflict. For a significantly better history book, I would read "Righteous Victims" by Morris, but this book is a long and complicated read. Most people won't won't have the patience to sift through all 800 pages of this difficult history. "Side by Side" is a reasonable but far less in depth history book.I would love to see both Jewish and Palestine high school students using "Side by Side" as their text for the study of the conflict, but I doubt most teachers and schools would endorse such a program. Unfortunately, part of the problem with both Palestinians and Jews is their need to indoctrinate their youth with only their narrative. I once heard a Jewish Israeli "scholar" say that he didn't want Jewish kids going to the Hand In Hand School in Israel. This is a wonderful school that educates kids from kindergarten through 12th grade and has both Jewish and Arab teachers teaching the narrative of both sides. This "scholar" said that he might be okay with sending high school students there, but he certainly didn't want younger students participating in such a program. My interpretation: Let us indoctrinate our kids first, and then maybe we'll let them hear the other viewpoint. Oy vey.

This is a wonderful book that literally shows both sides of history at once. It was very interesting to see what was included and what was left out -- on both sides of the story. I would have liked the texts to be more parallel. There were some historical events that were mentioned only on one side of the book. I understand that one of the purposes of this book is to highlight those gaps, but I would like to know what the other side says about those occurrences when they are not omitted.Overall, a very informative and interesting historical account of Israel and Palestine.

I was a bit leery about this title at first. I have a working knowledge of physics and a reasonably broad understanding of the fundamentals of quantum physics. But, more and deeper understanding is always better, and it's one thing to sort of understand what you're reading and quite another to truly comprehend what you just read or at least to extend your reach. So, this book looked interesting - except for the come on -- "Readers will sail the subatomic seas in search of electron ports, boson continents, and hadron islands. The sea itself is the quantum field, complete with waves." Really?Well, guess what. Dr. Butterworth makes this work. Our ship, (the particle), sails through the ocean, (making and encountering waves), and I'll be darned if the author doesn't turn this into the clearest, crispest, and most illuminating discussion of particle/wave issues that I've ever read. For example, Butterworth describes the behavior of waves as they pass through a channel and enter a harbor. We learn about amplitude, frequency, and wavelength by watching seagulls bob up and down. We learn about diffraction by watching the wave spread out after exiting the channel and we learn about interference by watching two sets of waves cancel each other out. We then turn to the famous double slit experiment and see every single one of these principles and observations born out by the experiment, although this time our waves are made of light. The point is stunningly and memorably clear. But then we play around with frequency and energy and thus begin to understand the particle aspects of light. From there we use the ocean as a metaphor for the "quantum field", and that becomes clear as well.At this point, even if you don't follow another word in the book, you will have begun to understand how quantum field theory "incorporates particle-like and wave-like properties into a new kind of object". You will begin to understand Feynman's "path integral", at which point you will be so pleased with yourself that you'll have to take a break and have a cup of tea just to calm down. And really, you've just started your journey. (O.K., so maybe that travel metaphor does work.)Everything beyond this point is bonus time if you're a casual but motivated science reader. And to be honest, at some point before the end the reader's understanding may top out. (Don't test me on supersymmetry.) But before that we will learn about electrons, neutrons and protons, about why Dirac equations are so important, about bosons and fermions, muons, leptons, matter and anti-matter, hadrons and quarks. You'll learn about quantum chromodynamics and gluons, and how does gravity fit into all of this? For these topics we don't really rely on the ocean/atomland travel metaphor anymore, except as a generally useful way to introduce and organize topics, but the whole "atom land" frame doesn't get in the way either, so if it helps the reader more power to it.My larger point is that this is one of the most useful, accessible, engaging, non-jargony, effective and yet modest teaching books I've seen. No celebrity scientist preening and no metaphysical blarney. This is a calm, earnest, patient, and authentically good natured effort to open the reader's mind. It was a tremendous and rewarding find.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

An enjoyable journey via analogy. As with all journeys, preconceptions vanish when directly exposed to the landscape, and the "creatures" that reside within. Additionally, (we) pass quickly through various scenes, observing but with little time for great detail. This is a directed journey focused on the Standard Model, with potential "side trips" kept to a minimum. Time (book length) constraints passed over facts and concepts perhaps too quickly, leaving areas of potential confusion. The author did excellent work in attempting to build a 2-dimensional analogy from what we currently know/assume/have evidence of, and is most certainly at least 4-dimensional in nature. In particular, I enjoyed the book's ending synopsis and speculations. I would have enjoyed further delving into areas such as further aspects of the double-slit experiment, quantum entanglement, and the like, but realize the constraints that the author stayed within.Recommended reading -- educational, and provides the opportunity to view "reality" in a different perspective...

Jon Butterworth, obviously a super-genius takes an extremely complicated subject, particle physics, and makes it interesting by making it into an adventure story of a magical land, complete with boats and seas and islands.

As a general, up-to-date overview of particle physics, I would have given this book four stars, because that's what I was looking for, and that's what the book delivered, for the most part. I would not have given it five stars, though, because I found the explanations of several phenomena unsatisfying (such as "How could there possibly be a 'massless particle'?" or "What causes a positive or negative charge to exist?"). That said, I realize I must allow for the fact that either the answers to such questions are still unknown or, if they are known, they would require more than a layperson's knowledge of math or physics to appreciate. I bought the book because I expected that the metaphor of a map would help me visualize what is happening at the atomic and sub-atomic scale, but the reason I gave this book only three stars is that I feel the metaphor, which I found to be a little too cute, does more harm than good. My impression was that the author had to struggle to relate reality to the metaphor, and I continually had to struggle to make the connection. In my opinion, visual illustrations or diagrams could have been much more effective -- less amusing, perhaps, but more effective.

I recently transitioned out of the military into a corporate job and had no experience with P&L and no financial background but was expected to pick financial terms and concepts up right off the bat. I took an MBA course in finance and accounting to help me out but the information didn't really land as I had no business context with which to understand the information. This book really dumbed down a lot of the information and gave me exactly what I needed to understand the financial statements and budget issues within my company. I highly recommend!!!

This book is simply the best. The authors are fantastic, they present the material is such an easy to comprehend form which makes it fun.The book is structured around a fictitious business called "Rosie Rouse's Spouses Houses" (There are many more), however the author walks you through the understanding of this businesses and it's cost structure outlining all the elements that make up the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and how Rosie created a budgeting report, how to compare those reports with the actual results of the business and calculate it's variances to figure out if Management is executing on it's plan.I personally enjoyed the chapter regarding Equity, which I think is fundamental for beginning entrepreneurs or investors. There are however topics that this book doesn't cover, however I'm rating it a 5 star because this book sets the foundation to continuously build upon.. any book about finance should only be read after reading this book... PERIOD..Great Job

Clearly a book everyone should read. I had it for college but wow when I read the information. Everyone can learn something from this book. If you are an small home business owner, good information on how to get the most out of tax returns, stocks and investments.

fast shipping great price

I have never been a number guy but recently I have been serious about learning more about finances . As the book says words are the language of love and numbers are the language of money. I've read, Trading Bases about sports and numbers, I read Moneyball and now, Finance for Nonfinancial managers. My takeaway is that once you know the formulas and rules of financial reports is not too complicated. You learn about budgets, income statements, and cash flow statements. The reasons I gave it only 4 stars is because more examples of finances for non-business issues like buying a car, or doing a family budget, etc. and the other reason I didn't give it a 5 stars is I personally like summary chapters where you tie everything up and sometimes going further and break it down in a summary type of way.I recommend it for anybody who sleep walks through budget, meetings. I took the online test and if you pass and will get a certificate.

This finance book provides good information in logical order of topics for primarily those without a finance or accounting background but can still be a good refresher for those of us with it. This book provides a lot of different income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, etc. It also uses fictional companies for the various topics/examples which makes it easier to follow. The only negative thing about this book are the numerous corny jokes. For example:When the equipment is sold, lost, junked, or stolen, accountants have a catch-all word for any of these events. They talk about the disposition of equipment. This does not refer to how the equipment feels today (mean equipment/happy equipment) . It refers to the disposal of old equipment.

My Crazy taiwanese professor approved!

Purchased this book for an IT class. I did not really need it since I had experience in accounting. if you have any type of accounting experience, do not buy this book. You will be somewhat disappointed.

Nothing against acrylic technique books, but this is not another one. Instead, Davies provides the budding or more established artist with thought provoking principles, not rules, about why things might or might not work in a piece. I particularly appreciated the deep dive into how to think about and see your art and that of others in a new and objective light. As with her generous videos and other books, this one is thoughtfully presented but never dogmatic. In fact, she challenges some accepted dogma with an eye towards helping the individual artist find their own voice. The artwork in it is beautiful and really helps clarify the concepts presented so that one can get them past the brain and actually utilize them in the studio. I hope it gets the wide readership it deserves.

I admire Jane Davies and her work. I was very excited to receive this book. The exercises look good, but I must agree with other reviewers. The quality of the book is poor. The paper is flimsy and the book is small. The text is a small font and very pale gray, making it extremely difficult to read. It's definitely overpriced at $22.00. I might return it.

I cannot recommend this book because the type color--18% gray--makes it incredibly difficult to read. I know it was done on purpose because certain headlines are printed in black type but the majority of the book is unreadable.Very frustrating as I like the authors artwork but purchased this book to learn more about abstract design and the process she uses. The nearest workshop is 7 hours away from where I live so I thought buying the book would be valuable and really looked forward to reading it.I cannot understand sacrificing readability in this case where words matter, this is not just a book about the paintings themselves. If I can't find a way to read this without getting a headache, as happen ed in the first 30 minutes of trying, I will return it. Disappointing for me.

I agree with M. Cruz about the cheap quality of the book's paper. The content was excellent but the cheap quality of the book was a definite negative to my creative excitement. Yes, Jane has been very generous in sharing her talent and we should all support her by buying the book.

I was just a little hesitant to order based on some other reviews of text size and color. Those issues must have been resolved because the text size is appropriate and it's black now rather than gray. It reads very easily. With that aside, the content is layed out rather abstractly to me. This is good. It's not meant to be a step by step process but instead a thought and evaluating process of what abstracts consist of. The book doesn't stress or push one type over another. It simply causes you to see not the process of how you create what you do but how important it is to 'find' your process.I think it's good and I'll end up reading it many times over just for the head clearing effect it has.I suggest you do the same.

This seems like a great book and would probably get a good review, but the writing is so faint that I'm really struggling to read it. This I'm sure is nothing against the seller but probably the publisher.

Instructive and inspiring. Exercises are well thought out and helpful in improving my ability to critique my own efforts at creating abstract art. I have struggled to understand what works and what doesn't. This book may actually succeed in helping me make sense of how to create abstract art that isn't hit or miss.

I have taken two online classes from Jane Davies- both were terrific. Her book is no exception- Part how to book with clear directions and wonderful examples and part art education. Jane uses the art elements to give a common language for artist to talk about their work. This also helps artists to look at their own work in a new way or context. Just flipping through the pages makes me want to rush to my studio and get my paints out.
