This is my first book on the topic of fashion's influence on the environment and society. I was looking for a book on that topic in the first place because I knew a bit about fashion production but wanted to know the details. This book is very thorough and goes over every step in fashion and fabric production, revealing a lot of facts that average consumer never thinks about. Definitely recommended for people who would like to make more conscious decisions when shopping.

Very detailed on every aspect of the fast fashion industry. Great book.

This book has completely transformed the way I look at clothes. I used to think only of whether I myself could afford an item of clothing; now I think of the quality, the amount of wear I get out of it, and whether I really need it. This should be known to everybody!

Very interestingly written book. Keeps you focused!

Along with Elizabeth L. Cline's Overdressed, To Die For has changed the way I will consume fashion for the rest of my life. A must read for any fashionista.

This book changed me. My views, perceptions and understanding of the real cost of what I wear.I think it should be made part of school curriculum for every child in the world.

47 Days: The True Story of Two Teen Boys Defying Hitler's Reich

Review

On the run, Günter and Helmut are trying to avoid Hitler's last propaganda command in 1945 of sending 15 and 16-year-old boys to fight for their country. Germany is slowly but surely losing the war when Hitler tries to swing it around to his advantage by ordering elderly men and young teenagers to enlist. Annette Oppenlander's novella, 47 Days: The True Story of Two Teen Boys Defying Hitler's Reich, focuses on Günter and Helmut who, without knowing how much longer the war will last, disobey the command and run away instead of reporting to their destination. If caught, the boys will be executed for desertion. Will they resist or will they eventually give in and join the ranks? Annette Oppenlander has written an intriguing and fascinating young adult adventure that will have readers rooting for the fugitives during their daring but terrifying act of defiance. Even more suspenseful is the fact that the fate of the boys is not subject to the whim of the author but, by the time of reading, had already played out in 1945. Readers can only pray that 47 Days will have a happy ending. The language is beautifully simple, but descriptive enough for readers to feel as though they have been transported back into some of the scenes and are watching the action live. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, as will other lovers of historical books, especially those focusing on World War II and Hitler's rampant insanity-driven acts. I look forward to more richly detailed and compelling books from Annette Oppenlander!

From the Author

Based on my father's experience as a youth in World War II, 47 DAYS takes us into the last months of the war. The 'Reich' is crumbling, but Hitler frantically throws the last warm bodies into battle: old men, the injured and feeble, and all 15- and 16-year old boys. With the Allies and Russians spreading across German soil, it is a wasted effort. Hitler well knows it is too late and that the war is lost. But in his insane mind he justifies discarding the youth of the country. If Germany can't win, they can all go to hell.My father, Günter, and his best friend, Helmut, were among those teens, drafted in March 1945. They were told to travel 200 kilometers south to report to the Hitler Youth Office in Marburg and jointedly defend the fatherland. Without training, without weapons. My father and his friend decided it was a bad idea. They chose to think for themselves and disobey. The prize was their lives because being caught meant certain execution. At the time nobody knew how much longer the war would last. And so the task of hiding and eluding became a race for survival. Not to mention the turmoil Günter and Helmut must have felt every single day. Had they done the right thing? Would they get caught? Well, they almost did. And they almost died.I chose to publish this novelette separately because I wanted to share the conflict and threats these boys endured for disobeying orders. If you are interested in historical action/adventure and the state of Germany in the last months of World War II, this story may be of interest. I also believe it would be beneficial for high schoolers studying German history.47 DAYS is an excerpt from the full-length novel, SURVIVING THE FATHERLAND. Defying Hitler's orders was my father's way to keep his sanity...and as it turns out, his life.Â

This is an exert of the book, Surviving the Fatherland. I ended up getting the book. I couldn't put it down. We were stationed in West Belin, Germany, in 1984-1987 and I thought I knew everything about the war. This shows the position of the average Germans in their villages as they struggled to survive the war. I knew nothing about them. I lumped everyone together, not realizing how non-Nazis lived and suffered. I highly recommend these books.

This book is a few chapters taken out of the book "Surviving the Fatherland." As I already ordered this book, "47 Days" was a waste of money. I should have read the previews more carefully. As its own story, 47 Days is entertaining but should not have been compiled as it is not complete and too short a read.

If you read surviving the fatherland you do not need this book. It's all in it. Surviving the fatherland is a must read

I recommend this book for schools it has to be remembered. This should never happen again! We must read to know the truth

I gave it three stars because I was expecting a book but it's only and excerpt and the print is really small. However it was interesting enough for me to want to read the actual book.

Loved this story! I really like stories like this and this one did not disappoint!

Very interesting. A small slice of life in extremely difficult times.

Good read.

Review

In The Future of Work, Darrell West explores how emerging technologies will change the way we live. He provides interesting insights on how to think about the future of AI, robotics, and the Internet of Things.―Steve Case, Chairman and CEO, Revolution, and Cofounder, AOLThe author provides an interesting glimpse at the latest innovations: nimble robots, sophisticated software, an “Internet of Things” through which everyday objects communicate with one another. He shows how these innovations might affect existing industries and spawn new ones, reducing the need for some types of jobs and increasing the need for others, as well as changing the way people work in whatever jobs they have.―Wall Street JournalIf you want a concise, clear-eyed, evidence-based, and up-to-the-minute overview of the future of work, this is the book for you. It’s an indispensable guide both to the deep changes that are occurring and to our best options for responding intelligently to them.―Andrew McAfee, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyThe future of work is the future of the economy and how we live. No one knows in the age of AI what it will be, but this book is the best guide yet to come out.―Lawrence H. Summers, Harvard UniversityThere is little doubt humanity is on the precipice of massive change in how we work. The only question is whether it is a future of shared prosperity and leisure or one of mass unemployment and turmoil. The Future of Work offers a quick introduction to the basic concepts that underlie the debate.―New York TimesDarrell West crisply outlines the astounding leaps by which machines are replacing human workers, and warns of the devastating consequences that are likely to follow. But West also offers hope. We may be able to redefine work and renegotiate our social contract, if we make major reforms in our political system. Humans, plan ahead!―Benjamin I. Page, Northwestern University and author of Democracy in America?

From the Inside Flap

The digital economy is hereRobots, artificial intelligence, and driverless cars are no longer the stuff of futuristic visions. They are with us today and will become increasingly common in coming years, along with virtual reality and digital personal assistants. As these tools advance deeper into everyday use, they raise fundamental questions: how will they transform society, the economy, and politics? If companies need fewer workers because of automation and robotics, what happens to those who once held those jobs? Many social benefits are delivered through jobs, so how are people without full-time employment going to manage?Looking past today’s headlines, political scientist and cultural observer Darrell M. West argues that society needs to rethink the concept of jobs, reconfigure the social contract, move toward a system of lifetime learning, and develop a new kind of politics for an era of economic dislocation. With the U.S. governance system in shambles because of political polarization and hyper-partisanship, dealing creatively with the transition to a fully digital economy will vex political leaders and complicate the adoption of remedies that could ease the transition pain. This book presents a number of proposals to help all of us adapt and flourish as our industrial economy inevitably becomes a digital one. This ranges from creating new forms of job identity to encouraging lifelong learning, from emphasizing leisure activities in the arts, music, and culture to overhauling the social contract and making fundamental political reforms. It is vital to address these issues in order to avoid widespread economic and political disruption.

I am well versed in the science and technology of AI, I was seeking information re the social side of the issue and how it may be implemented. The book discussed many of my questions and poised many more. I believe that the 2020 election year will reveal the good, bad and ugly side of AI, and electoral elections will never be the same again.

Excellent book. West does a first great job of explaining the new aspects of AI and The Internet of Things. His quantitative analysis as both convincing and interesting. Good book

There is not much in the book that is insightful. West covers the familiar territory if automation and the polarisation of american politics.

Gives insight and foresight of what lies ahead of us and how we should prepare for it. Academics should read this

It's our future.

I agree with Darrell West that various technologies are altering and leading us to an automated society. "In this book, I explain the impact of these emerging technologies on work, education, politics, and public policy." He examines drones; reviews advances in AI (e.g. machine learning); explores the increasing reliance [dependence?] on sensors (e.g. The Internet of Things); argues that at a time of accelerating technology, we need to reconsider/reevaluate the ramifications of all this for the labor force as well as rethink the concept of work itself; strongly advocates lifetime learning to accommodate constant change; questions whether the U.S. political system "is up to the challenge of a transition to a digital economy; and in the final chapter reviews his specific recommendations with regard to robots, AI, and automation. As I read and then re-read West's recurrent emphasis on the importance of practical education, I was again reminded of Alvin Toffler's prediction in his classic, Future Shock (1984): "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." With rare exception, only those actively and productively engaged in machine learning will gain the literacy to which Toffler refers. To West's substantial credit, most of the information, insights, and counsel he provides will be invaluable both to those who manage and to those who are managed in the workplace of the future. Like customers, employees have more and better choices than ever before that must be accommodated. Their needs, interests, issues, and preferences have significant implications and potential consequences. In turn, employees must recognize -- and appreciate -- the challenges that managers face each day in a business world that has become more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more ambiguous than at any prior time that I can remember. These are among Darrell West's concluding remarks and deserve close attention and frequent consideration: "The United States and the world are at a major inflection point. The increasing adoption of digital technologies and frequent changes in business models have fueled a dramatic changed in the U.S. Employment landscape and an increase in economic inequality. Inequality in turn threatens the political process by making it difficult to address underlying social and economic issues. As noted by Rachel Nuwer in her analysis of how world civilizations fail [for BBC News], 'Disaster comes when elites push society toward instability and eventual collapse by hoarding huge quantities of wealth and resources, and leaving little or none for commoners who vastly outnumber them.'" Karl Marx addressed several of the same concerns in his three-volume classic work, Das Kapital (1859) as did George Orwell more recently in Animal Farm (1945).I commend Darrell West on the abundance of valuable information, insights, and counsel that he provides in The Future oif Work. In the final chapter, his recommendations with regard to various economic and political reforms are research-driven as his 27 pages of Notes clearly indicate. Those who read this brilliant book would be well-advised to highlight key passages and keep a lined notebook near at hand in which to record their own notes as well as questions, comments, and page references. If you are in need of a single source to increase your understanding of the future of work, look no further. This is a "must read."

The book arrived as advertised.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: Glenn Beck Interviews Richard Paul Evans In this exclusive Amazon.com interview,Richard Paul Evans, the #1 bestselling author of Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25, speaks with Glenn Beck about where the idea for the series came from, why Michael Vey is an unexpected hero, and what comes next for Michael Vey. Glenn Beck: I know why I was drawn to reading this series, but what inspired you to write it? Richard Paul Evans: Two things inspired Michael Vey. First, after writing literary novels for more than two decades, I wanted to write something just for the sheer joy of it. I’ve always loved superhero stories. When I was a boy I used to rake leaves for the neighbors for money to buy comic books. So writing Michael Vey was personally satisfying. Second, I felt like the Young Adult genre had been overrun by vampire- and dystopian-themed books. I just wanted to write an original good read—something unique and exciting without all the negative life scripts for youth. GB: Where did the idea for electric children initially come from? RPE: Good question. After more than 75 years of comic books, it wasn’t easy finding a unique superpower—and Michael Vey isn’t the first to use electricity. But once I came up with the idea to focus all the youth’s powers around electricity, I was able to create something that I felt was both entertaining and distinct. GB: What’s the best story you’ve heard from other parents about their kids being introduced to the books? RPE: While I’ll never tire of hearing that the Michael Vey series got a child to read, my favorite story came from a parent of a youth struggling with severe Tourette’s Syndrome. Her child decided that if Michael Vey could face his Tourette’s with courage then so could she. This mother said the book made a remarkable difference in her child’s self-esteem and social life at school. GB: Michael Vey has Tourette’s syndrome and isn't necessarily the “cool kid” in school. In other words, he’s not your typical hero. Why didn’t you make him the quarterback/prom king/valedictorian that most readers are used to? RPE: I wanted a hero that the average reader could relate to. I’ve never believed that the real heroes of this world have perfect physiques and bulging muscles. A hero’s power comes from the heart not the biceps. I wanted Michael Vey to exemplify that. GB: The big reveal of why these kids are being hunted is really unique and original—it's not wizards or angels or vampires. Where did you get this idea? RPE: Once I developed a plausible explanation for how these youths developed their particular mutation, it opened up an entire world of social, ethical, and political options to explore. The direction the story line can follow is infinite in possibility. GB: Every time my kids read another book in the series they ask me this, so now I get to finally ask you: If you had to pick one of the kids’ powers to have yourself, which would it be and why? RPE: Frankly, I’d love to have any of the Electric kids’ powers (except Nichelle’s), but, from a practical standpoint, I’d have to go with Taylor’s. The ability to reboot people at any moment would give you a tremendous amount of power over any situation. (Imagine Taylor at the presidential debates!) And reading minds would definitely come in handy—especially my wife’s. GB: I know there’s a lot more still to come in this series. Do you have the whole thing mapped out in your head already or does it come to you over time? RPE: Since the moment I began writing Michael Vey, the series has felt like a gift to me. I have some general ideas on where the series will go over the seven books and a pretty good idea at how it will conclude, but the details still come to me like manna—just enough for the day.

From Booklist

Fans of Michael Vey will not be disappointed in this high-octane addition to the series featuring a boy who can manipulate electricity and who tries to stop the nefarious Dr. Hatch from controlling the world’s power. Picking up from the final escape scene in Rise of the Elgen (2012), Michael finds himself in the Amazon rain forest. There, he joins forces with Tessa, whose ability to amplify powers comes in handy as they try to free the other Glows still held captive. Evading both the Elgen and Peruvian armies, the teenage Electroclan try to stop Dr. Hatch and return home once and for all. While the character development is shallow and the dialogue sounds dated, Michael and his friends are appealing, uncomplicated protagonists. Chaste romantic scenes and a conspicuous lack of profanity may widen the audience. Readers new to the series may be confused by the large cast and lack of backstory, but the relentless pace and constant one-liners should keep the pages turning easily. Grades 7-9. --Summer Hayes

#40,163 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Wow! I just finished this latest installment and I wasn't a bit disappointed. Richard Paul Evans' mind doesn't work like the rest of our's and he leads you down a predictable though convoluted path that just makes you crave for more and more, like some alley junkie looking for his next fix. This is a continuing saga in a soft, sci-fi package and you cannot help but like the group of young protagonists as they go about their business of saving the world from an evil, really evil, character. Can't wait for the next installment. I'm 64 but in my mind's eye as I read this novel, I became 16 again! Thank you!

I didn't love this book as much as the second one, - just too much running around in the Peruvian jungle, and too much separation from the other teens. The big question here is who is the Voice? How does the group he represents always know what the Electroclan is accomplishing or when they need help? How can they ferry folks around the world to safety so fast. Are they part of the US government since they seem to find safety in the US? Lots of questions about this group and how they work. That will keep me reading. It was so predictable that some of the group would abandon Michael and his loyal friends, and also predictable that some would also come back. I could see that coming a mile away. This was a more depressing book because of the discouragement of the teens. The final fight scenes on board the ship was too short, while the jungle scenes too long. A death was predictable but still effective and especially the loyalty of his best friend. It also was sort of fake and phoney, but so predictable that Hatch would get away,,,, again! I guess he'll keep getting away as long as Evans wants to keep the series alive. I'm not sure how long this can be sustained. It is getting a little formulaic, like a Nancy Drew mystery. Change of scenery, but pretty much the same thing happens again and again. For the next book, I think Hatch should come and seek out Michael, instead of the usual. I disliked the torture and murder again. I know it has to be done to enhance the evil of Hatch, but still it is too much for me.

I received my ebook that I pre-ordered, but held off reading it. Why? Because I had waited so long to get it, and hated knowing I would zoom right through it and the next day it would be done, and I'd again be waiting for the next one. So, instead, I re-read the first two books, back to back, before I plowed through the newest one. I know it only delayed it three days, one for each book, but how wonderful to have each one to read one after the other. This newest one was full of all the fabulous exciting adventures you've come to expect from Michael and his Electroclan members. These books are so easy to "picture in your head" as you read. I taught elementary school for 34 years and wish I had had these books to read to my third through fifth grade students. My students would have loved these stories, and many would be rereading them over and over again after I read it to them. The only thing I'm sorry about, is that I now have to wait again for the next installment. However, it was so great to find out there are many of these in the works. I'm so glad it was not just a trilogy. I so enjoy reading a book where I've come to know the characters so well. In this book we learn so much more about the inner feelings of everyone. We find out bravery has nothing to do with not being scared. We also see what it means to do the "right thing". These books are what our youth need to be reading. They show children and adults what morals are still important. I'm in my 60s now, but still love these books. I enjoy reading young adult books, maybe because of having been a teacher, but mainly I think because of great books like these. I definitely would recommend these books to anyone. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

This book starts right where the second book ends. Michael Vey is in the Peruvian jungle with a helpful native tribe. Michael's mom is safe but the Electroclan have been captured by the Peruvian army because when they destroyed the Elgen plant they destroyed much of the country's source of electricity. Michael, with the help of a new character in the series named Tessa (who escaped into the jungle months before Michael arrived in Peru), have to go and rescue everyone from, most assuredly, being found guilty of treason and execution. Jaime, who works for the mysterious "voice" person and the reader meets in the Rise of the Elgen, helps Michael and the clan throughout the book, as much as he can. Then tragedy strikes. It will wreck you. I won't spoil it, but have tissues with you when reading this book. I cried big fat tears, and am glad I was reading it at home and not in public. The tragedy, and the decision to attack and sink the Ampere (the main Elgen boat) nearly tear the Electroclan apart. But I was happy in the end, and the book ends on kind of a cliffhanger, just giving you an idea of what the next book will be about.

After an impatient year- long wait, I was excited to read Michael Vey 3: Battle of the Ampere, the latest installment in Richard Paul Evans gripping series featuring Michael Vey and the Electroclan. It was even better than I had anticipated. I was totally blown away! The end of MV2 left us breathless and left Michael Vey, his mother and his friends still in the jungles of Peru. Michael has become separated from the rest after a harrowing ordeal with the Elgen. With his mother finally safe as told to him by an old friend, Michael together with new friend Tessa, eventually reunites with his Electroclan. The brave and loyal band of cohorts face many obstacles that just might keep them from their ultimate mission, to sink the Ampere and dethrone the devilish Hatch who has become more powerful than anyone could have imagined. This book keeps readers glued to every page. This a shockingly exciting, emotionally charged chapter of the Michael Vey series. Richard Paul Evans does an fantastic job at keeping both kids, teens and adults interested and engaged in all of the books in the Michael Vey series. RPE is truly a master storyteller that has kept the energy and sparks flying throughout this fun adventure. I will be recommending this book to everyone.

Such a fun book! I thought there would be a little more of the Swahili language used.

Fun story. Both my daughters loved it. It combines modern day kids and a classic tale.

Nice story

Set in East Africa and inspired by a Kamba folktale, The Matatu is a fun and educational picture book by author Eric Walters. For his fifth birthday, Kioko takes his first ride on a matatu (privately-owned bus transportation in East Africa) with his grandfather. Soon his grandfather is telling him to watch for goats, sheep, and dogs. As Kioko obediently looks out the window, his grandfather shares a folktale about why the dogs chase the mini-bus, the goats run away, and the sheep stand still. Eva Campbell delightfully complements the congenial story with bright and colorful watercolors.Even if readers skip the Forward from the Director of the Creation of Hope and the author's note, most American children will soon realize that The Matatu is about a different culture. Women carrying baskets on their heads isn't the norm in the United States. The marketplace with its huts, houses, and stalls isn't a common sight. Mandazi (fried bread or East African doughnuts) might be an unknown term. And then there's the matatu, which attracts the attention of two dogs, and for which one deposits shillings to ride. The forward reveals that a Kamba folktale exists about matatus and animals. One day the Director of the Creation of Hope in Kenya shared a brief version of it with author Eric Walters. Finding the story hilarious, Walters decided to capture it in picture book format. Before Walters was allowed to do this, however, the Kamba people needed to designate Walters as one of their elders with the right to tell their stories. The author's note further reveals that drivers of the matatu "barrel along at whatever speed the road will allow" and drive on "whichever side of the road is least potholed".Although reading the two informational notes provides insight into The Matatu, the story can also stand on its own as a shared moment between a grandfather and a grandson. The bus ride contains twists and turns, as does the charming tale told by Kioko's grandfather. After reading The Matatu, young readers might become more curious about the stories their own grandparents have to share. They might also want to jump aboard an African bus for a ride with a dog, a goat, and a sheep!

Having lived there for a few years, I found this story a delightfully reminiscent visit with the people of one of the many cultures of Kenya. The illustrations give a great impression of Matatus, villages and people in the countryside. The story is similar to other stories I remember from our time there, where animals are the characters and a moral is taught - similar to Aesop's fables. When I read it to my almost-three-year-old grandson, it kept his attention all the way through, and I enjoyed it as much as he did! I'd love to find other books like this that give such a wonderful glimpse into everyday life in various places, with sensitivity and respect, and without being preachy.

This delightful story book to read aloud is one of the 2013 Best Books for Younger Children in the annual Children's Africana Book Award competition run by the K-12 Outreach Council of the African Studies Association. Eric Walters' charming tale is equally carried by Eva Campbell's vivid watercolors which depict the hustle and bustle of daily life in a rural village in contemporary Kenya. Walters' tale adapts folktales from the Kamba community in Kenya to show how a grandfather incorporates his vast repertoire of stories about animals to entertain and educate a five year old grandson during a long bus trip. I love finding new authors that I can enjoy! The newest find is Emily Windsor and her book An Earl in Wolf’s Clothing. I enjoyed the book. This is the first book in a series Rules of the Rogue and I am looking forward to reading more books in this series!Miss Sophie Beckford has put up with six seasons in London and she is done. The noise, confusion, and pretenses have driven her mad. She is ready to leave London and has decided on marrying Bram, Earl of Kelmarsh. She feels for him as he seems to be always laid back, sleepy and doesn’t seem to be present, but he too longs for the country. Sophie is hopeful until she needs to find him and overhears a conversation that she misinterprets, and so the story begins. That is when things get complicated. Bram, the Earl of Kelmarsh is a spy. He is from a family of spies and it is all he knows. What is overheard is Bram attempting to avoid a certain spy trying to force him back into her net. Sophie leaves and suddenly Bram is left behind. A year later, when Sophie returns Bram, with the dubious help from friends and acquaintances tries to get Sophie to trust him and marry him.Having well rounded and delightful characters just made the story better. I was glad that Sophie had the gumption (and family backing) to stand up for what she wanted. Sophie’s cousin Aideen was a hoot. Bram’s background really made opening up a hazard, so watching his character grow (and grovel) made him more likable. An Earl in Wolf’s Clothing by Emily Windsor was a fun read.

I loved this book. I haven’t laughed so many times during a read in a long time. These characters were hysterical. Finished it in two days. I also thought it was romantic. The hero, Bram, was persistent, which was pretty hot; even I thought the heroine should have given in at some points (smile). However, it was nice to read about a heroine that didn’t gasp and utterly fall into the hero’s arms at every word and touch. But, there were times when she was stubborn, yet it worked for her. This was my first time reading a book by this author. I believe I will try the second book in this series, since it continues on with the other interesting and hysterical characters from the first book.

This is the first book in an (apparently) 4 part series. The author has a really good grasp of story telling and a good ear for dialogue. The characters are interesting, the plot is fast moving, and I really enjoyed the book. I have also read book 1.5 and book 2 (both are reviewed separately) and am eagerly awaiting book 3 which should be published soon.I agree with another reviewer who said that this author made me sit up and take notice. I look forward to reading her next book!

Another great read by this author. She has a great style of writing that brings the pages to life. You will not be disappointed. Each character is cultivated to bring the entire story to life, you want to join them in the adventure. Highly recommended.

This was another very good romance novel set in the early 1800's. An Earl wanting to leave the spy business because it is ruining his chance at love

it was a nice entertaining book. I liked the characters, the secondary characters almost more than the h/H. There isn’t a lot of drama or suspense, but a sweet enjoyable story. The end was to abrupt and I really would have liked an epilogue.

You can't find better Regency romance than this series. Emily Windsor is a fabulous author and so very enjoyable. You will laugh out loud and just enjoy the heck out of this romping romance/adventure. Bram and Sophie are great characters, fully fleshed out. We enjoy their ups and downs, as well as those of their stalwart friends. I'm so thrilled that finally the third book is coming out!! Keep up the great work, Emily!

Happy to discover this author, have read other books by her since Book one. I actually enjoyed Book two more. Well written, definitely keeps your attention.
