Just a warning on this book if it's a gift- my book came with a giant barcode sticker on the cover that was impossible to take off-cleanly.The book itself is great! Super heroes and villains- everything a little kid would love. Illustrations are nice and stories are great for ages 5+.Added some pics to show barcode sticker, illustrations and table of contents.
My son loved the 5 minute star wars stories, so much so that we bought him this book and the DC version too. We were disappointed that the Marvel one doesn't use much imagination and is pretty violent. I know that's true to the comics but my 3 yr old doesn't need to see Spider-Man beating every villain with a right cross to the jaw or a jump kick to the back of the head.The DC 5 minute storybook, by contrast, includes a bunch of creative (albeit silly) stories where the heroes use their brains to beat the bad guys. There's very little violence.Violence has a place in stories, but I'd prefer to keep it out of stories for young kids who aren't quite mature enough to make good decisions about when to emulate their favorite super heroes.
My boyfriend wanted to introduce our toddler to his love of Marvel comics, so I thought this would be perfect, and when I saw Black Widow on the cover I figured she'd have a story featured inside the book. Sadly this was not the case -- not only is NO woman character featured, but they appeared on barely any pages even in the background AND they had several stories about the same character. Both girls and boys need to see equal representation of both genders in superhero books. I especially don't want my little girl to get the message that only men can be heroic. Marvel has had so many serious issues with failing to represent their female characters on the toy market, and I'm disappointed they are still struggling with this lesson in this day and age. Thank goodness I bought it used. I'm glad I didn't give them any of my hard earned money.
My 4 year old son is very interested in super heroes and this book fits the bill! The stories are a pretty good length and will range from the advertised 5 min to closer to 10 depending on how inquisitive your child is. Mine can't go 2 seconds without asking a question so sometimes these stories take awhile. I've seen some folks complain about the "plot" etc. but my son is 4 and doesn't really need a Hitchcock film....he just wants the good guys to beat the bad guys, and they do. Personally I like that he gets "good" guys and "bad" guys shown to him, yes the world is shades of grey....but he's 4...lets start with "good" and "bad" and go from there. For me the most important thing is he wants these stories read to him, he listens (with frequent interruptions for questions), and he is interested in reading! My biggest complaint is I don't find the artwork to be as good as some of the other children's super hero books I have seen. The art isn't glossy and doesn't really "pop" off the page, kinda bland if you ask me. My son hasn't complained so apparently it doesn't bother him. Yes there is some "violence" in it but it's pretty minor and heavily stylized so I don't have too much of a problem with it. Yes there is fighting, and fighting is "bad", but I also use that as an opportunity to reinforce the difference between real and fantasy to him. Anyway, I feel that folks shouldn't over analyze a children's story, I was brought up with Hansel and Gretel where the witch was going to eat the damn kids!!!! Even though this beautiful oversize hardcover 188 page full color illustrated pages (5-Minute Marvel Stories) book is aimed at children; nevertheless, if you are into graphic novels or short stories about super heroes this is a book even some adults might enjoy. The full color illustrations really make the short stories come alive.The book is organized into 12 stories and includes the following: The Amazing Spider-man: Keep away from Kraven the Hunter, Spider-man vs. Sandman, Spider-man vs. the sinister six, Peter Parker’s pictures, the uncanny X-Men: the X-men’s first mission, The mighty Thor: a brother’s battle, the Iron Man’s new armor, surprise attack, The mighty Avengers: Captain America Returns, Hawkeye and the mighty Avengers, The incredible Hulk: Desert Brawl, and the courageous Captain America: The lethal lair of red skull.I found this to be a fun book to read and it reminded me of the comic books I used to read when I was a young boy. My four year old son loves this book, and I think it will remain age appropriate for a few more years. They have taken the standard superhero stories here and made then simpler and more appropriate for young kids. We like that there are a large number of different stories with a lot of different superheroes. There is a lot of text, but it is broken up nicely with illustrations. Overall, a favorite of ours. The only issue is that it has inspired my son to want superhero themed toys and sheets and everything else!
I was very happy with the quality of this book, as were both parents of the boy I got it for! It’s put together well and I was happy with the illistrations. The parents said their 4 year old girl and 3 year old boy both love this book! Especially for $10, definitely recommend!!!
This, like all of the 5 minute stories series, was a great find for a 5 year old. He can listen through a chapter book but is too old for board books. So these are a great middle ground for bedtime. They are all pretty cute and stay true to the spirit of Christmas (Santa Clause, etc.). He really enjoyed the stories with his favorite characters. And suffered through the princess ones although I think he enjoyed them more than he'd admit.
