Love this textbook! Arrive brand spanking new, still in its original wrapping. Great textbook for my pathology class, tons of easily available information and helpful diagrams/pictures. My only dislike with this book is that the text is fairly small, otherwise this book is perfect.

Arrived in good condition.

The book is excellent but it came with little damage in the spine and the corner of the front cover. The transporter wasn't very careful.

This book is incredible. it gives great explanation on what your learning and breaks it down so you can understand it. I like to do the examples in the book for practice and I use the free online component to reinforce what I’ve learned. I get more from this textbook than during the lecture we have in class.

I am in an Associate Degree of Nursing program and this textbook was required. We will be having our first math exam tomorrow, and I feel that this book has helped me tremendously. I have never been confident when it comes to math but I am confident I will ace my test tomorrow.

It was a good book but I felt the second half didn’t quite meet the expectation of the start. A great basis for a story, clearly well researched from the historical records of the time. However as a story I felt the ending was a bit of a let down, I was left wanting some better resolution but I guess that may have distracted from the facts of the real situation. Loved the Icelandic story telling but again wanted to know more of the stories and couldn’t quite figure out the role of the fairy man. All in all a good first novel by Sally Magnusson but I was left a bit underwhelmed.

I was attracted to the cover of this book, depicting a pensive girl with long, blonde locks looking out at an ice-packed sea. I also found the practise of capturing Icelandic people from their shores in the fifteenth century, to work in African cities like Algiers, unusual and an interesting angle.This bit of history could have been researched and taken so much further. The book centres instead on the imagined life of one of the slaves after capture. She is Asta, a wife and mother. It would not have worried me, as fiction goes, but I was disappointed as I found the plot unbelievable, especially when an attractive elf appears to spice up Asta’s romantic life in a touch of magic or fantasy which seems out of place in the story.Still, the book does contain interesting facts, including a brief history of the Moors and a glimpse into the day-to-day activities of a wealthy household in Algiers, harem and all. The protagonist had to adapt to the psychological and long-term effects of life in a new environment and I appreciated the writer’s ability to describe the human ability to adapt and even come to appreciate aspects of altered circumstances.The art of storytelling features strongly in the book as Astor’s way of remembering her past life in Iceland and attracts her captor to her. It is the bond they eventually find to cement their relationship, about which I’ll say nothing further, at the risk of giving away too much of the story. I score it 3.5 stars.

A harsh, bleak and dramatic reality turned into a story so full of life, respect, love and colour ...... even sensuality at moments you least expect. Written in a language so beautiful and smooth that it adds an extra layer on top of the masterfully written story.I enjoyed this wonderful and emotional journey thoroughly and it leaves me a richer person. It will stay with me for a long time......and when it starts to fade, I look forward to starting over to discover new angles, depths and widths with an extra layer of colours

Who knew that in the 1600's the Icelandic people were captured as slaves. It was a beautifully written book and having the characters listed was very helpful. I cried at the end of this book.Definitely recommend it.

The real treatment of Christian slaves in Algiers is absentin this fable. We are never told that slaves were so badly treated that, despite the threat of endless beatings if they tried to escape, they continued to take the risk. They made repeated efforts to flee their cruel masters, and seldom succeeded. Slaves in Barbary fell into two broad categories. The ‘public slaves’ belonged to the ruling pasha [bey], who by right of rulership could claim an eighth of all Christians captured by the corsairs, and buy all the others he wanted at reduced prices. These slaves were housed in large prisons known as baños (baths), often in wretchedly overcrowded conditions. They were mostly used to row the corsair galleys in the pursuit of loot (and more slaves). This work was so strenuous that thousands died or went mad while chained to the oar.Slaves were resold, often repeatedly. As they aged their value naturally decreased, and owners were glad to get rid of them. The most unlucky ended up forgotten out in the desert, or in the Turkish sultan’s galleys, where some slaves rowed for decades without ever setting foot on shore.Shame on this author for not being COMPLETELY TRUTHFUL about the horrid conditions 99.9% of european slaves faced.

It is a beautiful book and the one star reviewer meant, I think, to give it many more. Read that review and ignore the single star - this is an accomplished historical novel - original, intelligent and moving. Highly recommended.

I was going to be seeing the play “A Doll’s House 2” and wanted to learn and read about the first novel! The origin story. It was so controversial for the time and you were in suspense as to what would happen! Quite exciting a read! I immediately bought a ticket to see “A Doll’s House”play next month. The message was important for the time and still remains important today even though there have been some societal changes. A worthy read and then the follow up volume. Applause!

This play was a high school reading assignment lo' those many years ago, and as with some other similar assignments, I've undertaken an initiative to re-read them, and consider how the book (as well as I) might have aged in the intervening decades. If fussy memory serves me correctly, I appreciated this play the first time around, and hopefully incorporated some of its messages into my thinking.Henrik Ibsen was the leading Norwegian playwright of the 19th century. This play was first produced in 1879. It is still one of the most popular, and performed plays in the world today. Certainly tame by today's "shock" standards, purportedly it did shock many in the audience when it was first produced, due to its scathing portrait of the staid bourgeois views of the role of women in society and marriage. In brief, not just subordinate, but rather a mere appendage to their father's, at first, beliefs and actions, which would later prepare them for the same role serving their husband. Scandinavia was, and often remains, in the forefront in terms of progressive social ideas and legislation. As one of my Swedish friends would quip: "Sweden is a moral superpower."The two principal characters are Torvald Helmer and his wife, Nora. There are several supporting characters, including Dr. Rank, a family doctor who is ill, Mrs. Linde an old school friend of Nora's, and Nils Krogstad, a bank employee, who is also much else. Money, and the lack thereof, is the catalyst for much of the action. Just when Torvald's promotion to bank manager seems to resolve the money issue, the "sins of the past" revisit the Helmer's with a vengence.Ibsen's portrait of Torvald is one of a man who is insufferably pompous, with very fixed ideas on propriety, and his wife's role as a helpless, not to bright, child. This is no marriage of "soul mates," as the expression has it, for marriages of more recent vintage. Torvald views Nora as a "doll," hence the title. He is also utterly selfish, viewing events only from his perspective, and not how they might have impacted his wife. The audience plays the part of the ancient Greek chorus, realizing how much Nora has actually done for Torvald, without his knowledge. I still remember this portrait from my high school read, and the vow not to turn out the same way.A few decades after this play was first produced, Virginia Woolf wrote her famous A Room of One's Own which had very similar themes. Ibsen though was the first, and the play's denouement, with Nora proclaiming to Torvald that she "needs a life of her own" and must determine who she really is, continues to resonate, almost a century and a half later. The play remains a 5-star read.

Five stars for the story. However, I have to rate the Chios edition with one star to encourage readers to seek out a better edition.The public domain edition (green cover, free download) uses italics when describing the scene or naming the character who is speaking. Only the dialogue is in unitalicized text, making it easier to read. The Wisehouse Classics edition, while containing a few minor typos, has even better formatting, using both indentation and italics to make it easy on the eyes. The Wisehouse edition was also free when I downloaded it.You can click the preview option for each Kindle edition to compare. This edition (Chios) is not well-formatted. No need to pay for it when better editions are available for free download.

Well, modern classic or classic modern. Anyway, I hadn't read this for many, many years. I can't believe how riveted I became as the play progressed.In spite of all that has changed in the world, Ibsen brilliantly evokes the humanity, the search, that is timeless.Beautiful, painful play.

This play is great and is a classic for good reason. The “illustrated” version is pointless. There are a couple of old pictures in the back of the book. You’d be better served googling “images from a dolls house Henrik Ibsen”. This version wasn’t bad in anyway, but it is not what I would consider illustrated.

We see Nora, this perfect little doll, song bird, as her husband says. But underneath we see an aggressive human being, stepping in secretly to obtain a loan to help her husbands health. We see her slow change from this pretty china doll into a real human being. The ending of the play I will leave for the reader to discover. I have see Clara Bloom perform this role with huge success. The play is 100 years ahead of it time

Chosen by my 100 year old English Professor for English Comp 161 (first level required English for college, highest beginner course, everyone must take it). I read the title and assumed it would be a 'chic' book, although it has some feminist overtones, it is not that by any means, and was written by a man - a controversial (at the time) author who revolutionized drama. This play was so popular at the time it first came out, its accurate to say that everyone in the world who was a fan of the theatre would have seen it. With its 'power to women' ideals, some patriarchal societies have been slow in allowing the play to be seen in their countries, or have even changed the story to be more according to their beliefs. A must read for any English student or English history buff.

I was watching Ellen's TV show on the day that Portia came for an interview about her book "Unbearable Lightness", I was intrigued, by the end of the show, I was saying to myself, I want to read this book. You go through life never really hearing of the actor/actresses who have any kind of disorder or disease, and the battles they go through. To hear her talk with Ellen, she sounded so sincere and sad and I don't know, I just felt that, it was something that I wanted to read. Which shocked me because I am one who reads Vampire related Novels all the time.I've read reviews where people are saying that she didn't talk about her life as she was growing up, but I don't think that the story, the life of her disease starts when she was growing up, I believe the story comes from when she started acting, and when she knew she was gay, and she had to hide it from everyone, because of society and the judgmental individuals. I believe that her disease comes from the stress of trying to be perfect for everyone around her and for a role on a tv show, that she thought they wanted someone who in this case was 'thinner' or a 'better body build'. And although there are those of us who are not actors/actresses, we too feel the same sometimes.When I was reading this book there were times where I was angry at Portia because she was sounding ugly, when she was talking about the people around her being 'fat'. My feelings were hurt, because I am a full figured woman, and to read someone say these things, it hurt my feelings. The ugliness comes from the disease, and once I realized this, I thought WOW, it really does take over everything.I think that whether you want to read this book for yourself, or because you know someone, or even if you just want to read it just because, I think that its a good Novel to read. In some ways, I think that reading her story gave me strength and a different mindset to the way I sometimes feel about myself. Which is, No I don't have a perfect body, and no it doesn't always make me happy, but sometimes having the perfect body, doesn't mean that a person has the perfect mindset. Happiness comes from within, and a person has to do what makes themselves happy.Overall, I think that Portia did a great job on this Novel. I have no regrets for reading it. I would recommend to others, as a matter of fact I already have.Thanks Portia, for having the strength to overcome and battle the disease, and showing your readers that everyone is human and that with love and support from those around us, anyone can succeed.!

I didn’t read this because I’m particularly interested in Portia de Rossi or celebrity, but because I’m interested in eating disorders. It turned out that I was fascinated to learn more about Portia and her career, which began at age 12 as a model, which is where the unhealthy bingeing and purging began. It’s when everything from her eyes to her thighs were discussed by her stylists, journalists, directors—everyone dissected her right in front of her, and she took those comments to heart. She couldn’t think of one single body part she liked—her eyes were too close together, her hands were too manly, her thighs were too big, her stomach too round. Also, she was gay, and, for a long time, she had a hard time admitting it because she was worried about ruining her career as an actress in America and how her family would react (when Ellen came out in 1997, Portia’s grandmother expressed disgust and stopped watching her).This is not an enjoyable read. It’s fascinating, but it’s tough to read page after page of such insane behavior. She would only eat 300 calories a day and yet run at top speed for an hour. I don’t even know how a human can do that day after day. Marathon runners carbo load. They at least eat vegetables occasionally. All Portia would eat was microscopic portions of tuna and egg whites. Reading endlessly about her obsession with calories gets tedious, but I kept going because I wanted to find out how she got to such a happy ending of being physically healthy and in love with such an amazing woman, Ellen.For a long time, Portia thought, “Not just anyone could have anorexia. It was a disorder of the highly accomplished, cultured, beautiful. It belonged to models, singers, and Princess Diana. I had always secretly been in awe of anorexics with their super-human restraint.”This book is about her disease and only briefly touches on her getting well. She stumbled for a long time before that happened. She went from 82 pounds to 168—all while being scrutinized by paparazzi!She writes, “Being sick allows you to check out of life. Getting well again means you have to check back in.” Later she adds that to get well, you have to find “something other than your body image to be passionate about.”She did learn a healthy balance. People become anorexic and bulimic for many reasons. People also overeat for many reasons—loneliness, for example, or because they scarf down food on the run instead of actually enjoying it. I definitely agree with her that dieting is not the way to go. You should accept your natural body weight by eating healthily and getting exercise, whether it’s walking your dog or going to a yoga class or whatever. While pumping iron at the gym doesn’t work for her, it does work for some people, but she’s also right about the diet and fitness industry preying on our insecurities, and how we need to do our best to ignore unhealthy or unattainable “ideals” and find the beauty of ourselves and how we fit into this world.

I spent 35 years in the Hollywood Business and like everyone in that rockin' catastrophe, I too wanted always to be 20 lbs lighter. I called it "getting down to my hunting weight." And I was a screenwriter! The skinny disease is endemic. Ms. De Rossi is a wonderful actor, a major player in two historic shows and yet, a tortured soul. My heart went out to her and I was truly glad she met and married Ellen D.This book matters.

Christianity is derived from two sources: Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. All too often, Scripture is emphasized more so than tradition. In this book Ms. Mathewes-Green introduces us to the Sacred Tradition behind Mary and the events leading up to the birth of Christ. I really appreciated the way she outlined the Protoevangelium and made it easy for people to understand. This 'pre-gospel' written by James the brother of Jesus is not one that is accepted by Protestants and even some Catholics get 'nervous' about it, but I feel that even though it is not a part of the recognized "canon" it is still a very interesting and useful source for Christians to understand why the Theotokos the Virgin Mary is important for us to respect, and it demonstrates in detail how her example of obedience to God is a good example for all of us to follow.
