As close to the actual autographs as one can get, thanks to the incredible work of Bruce Metzger. This is what the great Orthodox Christian churches use when the Greek books are not readily available (outside of the Divine Liturgy -- for studying Holy Scripture).

I enjoy my compact zippered RSV Bible so much that I wanted a full sized edition. I decided on the Oxford Annotated Bible. The print is 10 point. It is very clear and readable. This Bible is medium sized and "just right" for me. The leather smells really good. It actually smells better than some of my premium Bibles.I enjoy the RSV translation because its literal, trustworthy and understandable. I'm at the age where I cannot see the point in having a literal Bible that I struggle to comprehend. I would like to understand what I'm reading the first time that I read it. And I don't want to question if its accurate or not. Its possible to have a trustworthy Bible that is readable and the RSV is an example of that. It is written on the middle school level.This edition contains the Apocrypha. Its in the back of the Bible. While I don't consider the Apocrypha to be on the same level as Scripture I do like to know what people are talking about when they reference it in different commentaries, etc. So its good to have.Overall this is a terrific Bible and for the price its a bargain. I will likely purchase another one for future use after I wear this one out.

As far as translations go its probably the best out there.I wouldn't hesitate to put the RSV up their with the best translation into any modern language from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek. Moreover its truly a bible in the original spirit of the word (bible originally means something like library or collection of books); So the RSV is as universal as any bible ever, since its found wide acceptance not only with mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics, but also with Orthodox Christians. And not only among the laity, but among Clergy and Scholars. And..for our Evangelical readers; indeed, the RSV is the parent tr of the popular ESV; I would say that the Greek Old Testament books more commonly refered to as Apocrypha or Deutro Canonical, would be a refreshing worthwhile treat to those not familiar with those valuable books, especially Sirach but also the other books, as one reads these its hard to imagine why some don't consider these books canonical. If its just a matter of these not being of Hebrew origin, I believe there's evidence of particularly Hebrew fragments partiuclarly for Sirach. The only thing I would say that doesn't appeal to me, is that these "apocrypha" are on a section on the back after the NT even the relevant essays and explanatory materials. It would have been fitting to put them in between the OT and NT. To me that would have made them seem more a part of the OT. In my mind these books are part of the Old Testament cannon. But oh well, nothing is perfect, so I consider that qualm as superficial..This handsome Oxford Edition is well made, the red binding is a nice conservative shade of red almost "cardinal" the pages are thin but durable. Its actually not bulky at all especially when one considers its a study bible. it's actually compact and i would say is the I phone 5 of bibles. it feels good to hold. the font is good, and will appeal too young or old or tired eyes. the pages even smell good, reminds me of Church and Candles! its a study bible but the Editors (most seem to be IV leaguers) don't wear their religious ideas on their sleeves, yet one does detect a hint of their christian faith and reverence. Importantly, the text is continuous without bold paragraph titles so its free flowing as i imagine the originals were..I don't like popular paragraph titles or section titles for 3 reasons 1) they seem to make you focus on a particular point or theme in that section and we may miss out on other equally insightful ones, 2)the poetry or story seems choppy or interrupted and 3) i think the ancient authors intended for the text to flow in most cases. its so refreshing like reading anew. The original RSV by Thomas Nelson shares this quality with this Oxford Edition.All in all happy with this Edition. One will never really need to buy another bible. It may not be ideal or perfect for all readers, some prefer more devotional bibles, some more scholarly, However, nothing in life ever perfectly fits our ideal, and this edition is full of benefits. and for the price here on Amazon, I would say its a bargain. I remember seeing these at the book store a few years ago for $50 to $60 dollars. I hope this review helps, its the least I can do for the translators of this very poetic and worthy book and also for Oxford publishers.

The layout and words are as expected and this is my favorite version of the Christian bible. However the pages are so super thin in this one that its impossible to turn them without wrinkling or damaging. Sorry I chose it and will be replacing with a sturdier printing.

After years of using the NRSV, I decided to go back to the RSV which is somewhat more literal. An additional appeal to this Bible is that it is somewhat smaller and less bulky than the leather bound NRSV that I have been carrying around. The downside to going back to this RSV is that the annotations are not as up to date as those in the NRSV, and the RSV does not incorporate those texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls that you find in the NRSV. Overall, though, I like this Bible very much.

AS a USCF rated 1698 tournament chess player, I like this book quite a lot. I like that Neil McDonald spends somde text to explain the nuances of certain move orders, that, if played in the wrong order, could make your game into a bit of a nightmare for white. It makes sense to try to simplify ones opening arsenal as much as possible. I play 1.e4 quite frequently. So, I have to have an opening to play if my opponent answers 1.e4 e5. I can play either the Vienna Game, or the Bishops Opening, and those are my choices, with a bit of a preference to the later of the two. I have found in my games that the French Defense can be a tough nut to crack, and I play it as black a lot. Needless to say, if you play 1.e4, you had better have something prepared to use against the Sicilian Defense, as black's winning percentage is pretty high, and it is a very popular defense. With the KIA opening, you have a way to answer both of these defenses, and have pretty similiar, and sometimes exactly the same positions as white. The same for facing the Caro Kan Defense. If you play 1.e4 then, you can pick your system for double e pawn openings, and use the KIA for about anything else except for the Skandinavian/Center Counter. I'm also looking into the somewhat dubious Tennison Gambit, which can be used against 1.e4 d5 2.Nf3. I am not too far into this book yet, but find Mr. McDonald's style and explanation of the opening moves very helpful.

The best book according to the ratio of tangible effect on my play to the actual effort involved in reading it. In simple English I gained a lot in terms of opening preparation for very few hours of reading. I started playing the same system in all my white games with very good results and with a noticeable irritation on the part of my opponents. I play blitz online. My level could be approximated by the term expert.

Excellent book on the KIA! I use it mainly to supplement my E4 repertoire vs the French and Sicilian defenses, but this book can be a complete repertoire book for white. There are chapters on 1. Nf3 with typical black responses. Highly recommend this book!

The games are well chosen. GM McDonald has the opening in his repertoire and is a well respected chess writer. The advice is cogent. Strategic concepts and alternative lines are given extensive treatment in the notes. The point is made about the tactics underlying this positional opening complex.Unfortunately the book fell apart during the first time through, which significantly reduces its value. I contacted the publisher, but they did not deign to reply. I do not plan to purchase any more books from Everyman Chess

This book is another winner in the "move by move" series. It does a great job of giving the reader another option if, when playing White, you have had problems with the French Defense or certain lines in the Sicilian Defense.

i think you will need a better line against 1....c5.the rest is great!

It is challenging us (in good ways) to re-examine our ministries and helping us have clarity of focus.Bonus: It has given lay persons who are passionate for growth, words & stories they can point to with other lay people who sometimes have a harder time 'getting it'.

I am an Anglican pastor and had a member of my congregation give me this book to read. It is one of the most straightforward and helpful books on the topic of church growth that I have read. I recommend it for church leaders and for all Christian believers because it offers 8 principles for being a church member as well as a leader. So often books on church growth are mixed bags...some good stuff some not-so-good stuff. This book is all good stuff. The authors are Methodist pastors and speak primarily from examples of rapidly growing Methodist churches in the United States. They are speaking of churches rooted in the tradition of John Wesley who never soft-pedaled the word of God to grow a church. This is a book for leaders who want a church to grow via multiplying disciples and new believers.The 8 virtues are faithful and practical. They are also simple. As I was reading the book, I was thinking of methods of application. I recommend the book for all Christians because the pastor cannot do this alone. The 8 virtues require the participation of the church membership. The pastor can initiate these virtues and promote them but engagement and buy-in is needed from all believers.I look forward to emphasizing the virtues of this book and the book itself in future teachings and groups at our church.

"8 Virtues..." is an honest journalistic report that informs and reminds it's readers that God is always at the center of church growth. This book has already triggered many great conversations in our church, from the leadership to the layman. As a preaching minister, I have grown very weary with the number of 'flash in the pan' church-growth prescriptions that seem to emerge weekly, but this book's gentle approach disarms even the most cynical readers (such as myself). I am very thankful I found it. I anticipate that it will be one that I return too regularly.

Rev Miofsky has become a must read author for me. I have been a long time follower of his all his work such as online sermons, books and PowerPoints. He has an innate ability to take difficult challenges that we face every day, and break them down into easy to understand, bible focused concepts that are much easier to implement. While this book might be aimed at those trying to start a Church, the lessons in this book can easily be applied to other organizations such as businesses, groups, team, etc.

Defining the success of rapidly growing churches as “virtues”is a bit of an over-statement. More theological depth would be helpful.

Another great book to add to the 5 senses lessons.

I really don't care for the illustrations. Katie looks strangely deformed. The story was alright, but I found the illustrations unsettling.

My students really enjoyed the story.

This book was gifted to me by the writer to read and review. I enjoyed it. It is a book that can be read independently or read to younger children and pre-readers as a bed time story. The little girl Katie likes to read and learn, and starting with her hearing she explores the different sounds she can hear, loud and soft, high and low, and relates the sounds to everyday things like music, or a dog barking. She compares sweet and sour tastes and good and bad tastes. It goes the same way through all the five senses. I think it would encourage a child to come up with their own examples taken from their own life experiences and help them to express themselves.The language is child appropriate and straightforward, but the rhythm of the rhymes is not so good at times, a bit uneven. The American spelling would have to be adjusted if the book is to be sold on the British market, but on the whole this is a very nice book and the illustrations are excellent.

Katie Did is a simple picture book that takes the reader through the many ways and activities that we use for our senses. This is not only great for teaching about the five senses to younger children, but a great way to prepare an older child to do some sensory writing. This is great for a refresher.

My daughter really paid attention. I appreciated the questions at the end of the book; they helped her recall what she’d heard and it taught her better. Illustrations could’ve been helped, but that’s the only complaint.

A fantastic Amish romance collection of Tattie Maggard’s books with a discussion of each story to remind what happened in previous books.I have read almost all of Tattie’s books and to have them all in one place and go from story to story is a wonderful thing.Tattie has a way of writing that makes you feel as if you are in the story with the characters.I feel that Tattie Maggard should be charging more for this compilation as it contains 7 full books, not just a sampler of the stories.

I love all of Tattie Maggard works. This new book is fantastic. Tells you where and how the Amish live and work. Tells us what Tattie is all about and how she came to write Amish fiction. She explains the differences between Lancaster County Amish people and Swan Creek Amish. Takes you behind the scenes of how Amish people in different states live and they are different from many Amish communities in the US. I could not put this book down. I learned a lot about Tattie and her family and why she writes these books. Its a book you don't want to miss reading. Can't wait for more of Tattie Maggard's books to come out. She is by far, one of my favorite Amish authors.

No doubting this is a fun read. I read it in 1 sitting (I take weeks to read anything). I really loved the way Owen opened a world to the Municipalist we meet - freeing him from the constraints of a disordered world he thinks he can control. As they say, we make plans and God laughs.Yes it’s a page turner, entertaining and fun. If you leave it at that you miss what it means for our society, the widening gap between cities and countryside, polarization, how to fix it, how those fixes can go wrong - what to do if you’re caught in this machine. We see two approaches, to tighten the grip further or to become nihilists... which is the answer? Is either the cure? Is there a solution?If you want a fun read this is it. Just like a city from far off, it looks like a clean breezy skyline. Analyze the material and it’s implications and you find a multilayered, gritty, thoughtful commentary on our modern life.

Searching for Kirkland. Yep. Henry and Owen, the oddest couple of all odd couples, find themselves looking for Terrence Kirkland, the director of Metropolis, who has gone missing. Things have gone wild in Metropolis and they shortly find themselves up against...what exactly? This is one where there's an alternate reality where Owen, who is AI, is as much a detective, as Henry, a boring man who really isn't a detective at all. The early part of this is about world building (I found this interesting but realize others might not), the later part is a thriller. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. It's hard to describe, hard to review, but fun to read.

Bureaucratic policy might not seem like an exciting topic for a novel, but Seth Fried’s debut technothriller centers around just that. And, The Municipalists is a riveting read full of wisecracks, classic movie references, sassy computers, and fedoras. (Machine guns and grenades and a smattering of domestic terrorism make an appearance, too.) Light in tone but carrying a surprisingly heavy message about the relationship between institutions and progress, it has some stylistic flaws but ably entertains in spite of them.In an alternate America where cities can sprawl to 35 million residents, The Municipalists follows the escapades of a government employee at the United States Municipal Survey. With such high levels of urbanization, the USMS is a key part of bureaucratic administration. However, when a series of attacks on the agency occur, Henry Thompson, a morose, rigid automaton, is sent to the city of Metropolis to investigate. Accompanying him is a fellow-agent, with a penchant toward snark and alcoholism. The twist? That agent is OWEN, a supercomputer made alive through holographic projection. As they attempt to find the source of the disruptions, they pair tumbles from predicament to predicament, relying on the combination of OWEN’s intelligence and confidence, and Henry’s commitment to the agency and to organization, to pull them through. The plot is fast-paced, but the real highlight of the book is the relationship between Henry and OWEN. Their complimentary characteristics and mutual eccentricities take The Municipalists from a somewhat-predictable storyline to a book with heartfelt human (/nonhuman) interest.I certainly enjoyed The Municipalists; however, there were a couple of areas in which it left me a little bit wanting. In retrospect, I think I liked the concept more than I liked the way in which it was executed. The plot was fast-paced, which is good for a book with a lot of action. Still, at times the transitions between scenes of action felt disjointed, as if there was not enough of a lull between them, and sometimes left me trying to figure out how Henry and OWEN got from one point to another. In addition, there were a couple of other stylistic moves that Fried made that gave the book a truncated feel. There is a lot of very witty banter between the two protagonists, but many of OWEN’s comments are in indirect quotes. That is, instead of giving OWEN’s words directly as he said them, in quotation marks, Fried frequently has Henry summarize what OWEN said or did, which removes the reader a bit from the immediate action. Finally, the end of the book also felt like it could have used more space. No spoilers, but Henry undergoes some personality and lifestyle transitions that could have used more of a lead-up and more exploration, particularly because they relate so closely to the ultimate message the book very explicitly makes. But all of that is in the very last chapter, and so it feels like an abrupt acceleration and then braking.Overall, it almost felt like a book that had been edited down too much. I would have liked the author to dwell longer on transitions between scenes, to give fuller dialogue (particularly because the dynamic between Henry and OWEN is great), and to spend longer wrapping up the plot in order to make Henry’s character development more organic. Basically, I wanted a longer book. Still, that does mean that I very much enjoyed the book that I have, and would definitely have been willing to read more.The Municipalists is a fast-paced, smart, highly absorbing read. I found myself laughing at several points throughout. Fried avoids falling into the trap of over-stereotyping either the rational, socially awkward Henry or the quirky supercomputer OWEN, finding the right balance of human and machine, of reason and emotion, for both. The book is thought-provoking, challenging the dichotomy of right and wrong and raising issues relating to systematic disenfranchisement. This is an AMAZING read! I wasn’t expecting much, but from the beginning, it was an exciting ride. The dynamic between Henry and OWEN is what makes this book shine, but there’s wit and humor amidst a very dark, and very politically relevant landscape. I want a whole series of Henry and OWEN adventures now.
