The quote is symbolic of the entire book for me, in that it tells the casual reader little by itself, but forms part of the overall tapestry of odd facts, trivia, stories, and downright weird vocabulary that together make this book a delightfully entertaining, informative, and insightful read.In preparation for this book Bryson visited Australia several times, and covered an amazing (some would say crazy) amount of territory, most of it far, far off the beaten path. I greatly admire his characteristic ability to put interesting sights into historical perspective, although in my mind, he never really did answer the conundrums he posed early in the book about the Aborigines. I particularly enjoyed the sections devoted to the amazing ecosystem of Australia (and the subsections on the amazing number of things in Australia that can kill you), the number of silly museums and sites ("The Big Lobster") Bryson visited, and most charmingly of all, the seemingly endless topic of curious (if not downright eccentric) people that call themselves Australians.This is a great book, which I recommend highly to anyone interested in Australia. My only minor critique of the book would be its occasional redundancy (I understand it is hot, and that the Outback is large after the first one hundred or so mentions, for instance), but this is a small price to pay for an otherwise exquisitely entertaining travelogue.I have always wanted to visit Australia, and after reading this book, have redoubled my resolve to go there (despite the number of things waiting there to kill me.)

It has been twenty years since Bill Bryson, a writer originally hailed from a small town in Iowa, fell in love with Great Britain where people are delighted in small pleasures, called strangers “Love,” and orderly wait on lines in public without peevishness. So much so that he has even married one. Now it is high time that Bryson returns to the States along the lines of Odyssey, who returned home in Ithaca twenty years after the decade-long Trojan War and another decade of travails. In retrospection of the memories collected on his beloved adopted homeland, Bryson decides to take a valedictory jaunt around the island small but big enough to nurture him with a wealth of culture and a bounty of humanity. And he does it on public transportation and by hiking along with his trademark razor-sharp wits, intractably keen intelligence, and his usual touchy-feely way of observing people and things that either irk or pique him. All of it comes to fruition in this highly amusing and genially forthright travel memoir.You will be surprised to find out that the British think that the cereals are their invention. You will be overawed by the ubiquitous hedgegrows dated back to Anglo-Saxon times embroidering on the British landscape. Bryson will also take us for a ride in a London cab driven by an affably jocular cabbie who has to pass the Knowledge Test to memorize almost everywhere in the City of London. But London is not his demarcation of traveling. Bryson will further come along with you to Bournemouth, Exeter, Liverpool, which is his favorite city, Manchester, and even up north to Scotland all by train or coach, and by walking. With his truculent feistiness, irrepressible inquisitiveness, and scintillating sense of humor fabulously ingrained in his choice of the apropos words and jovial descriptions devoid of malice, Bryson is a cool cicerone, and your excursion will never be a bore.The book seems to be primarily aimed for British readers who might be curious about what a foreigner would think of them and their country as a whole. In that regard, Bryson’s words are predominately British in the sense that the words and expressions he uses in the narrative are familiar to the British. For example, “bank holidays,” “coach,” “lorry,” or “Sainsbury’s” are peculiar to the British ways of life. But this kind of cultural barrier is kindly tackled by Bryson by providing you with glossary of the British terms in the end of the book.I have read other books by Bryson because of the same reason that induced me to select this book: his story-telling like narration is very appealing to me with his proverbial witticism smeared in every word he employs. He may appear a grumpy American man, but he has a heart to feel and see milk of human kindness in every quotidian thing or nondescript person by using the most appropriate words in wonderfully lucid expressions. There is a charm in his writing that will make you an admirer of his writings, and this book is no exception. It is Bryson’s long love letter to the small island he has fallen for head over heels with sincerity and loyalty with kisses and promise to come back to her.

Great book if you love people who love themselves to an extreme. Also a great read if you hate the United States, especially southerners. Perfect for the "open-minded, progressive" types who look down their noses at anyone who doesn't behave and think exactly like themselves. Also, a great gift for anyone who likes books that pretend to be about people doing something, but then are really just about quitting doing that thing before they really get started.Here's a good example of the writing, "See, the Army Corps of Engineers aren't really good at building. One time this thing that they built broke. Moving on...I like Great Britain because there aren't that many Americans there. See, I really hate myself, so I take it out on all other Americans instead if just looking in the mirror and admitting that I am a sad sack."

No joke!You'll also be one of those people whose skin, hair and nails are radiant.No bloating, no stomach issues, no acid reflux, no constipation, no gassiness, no digestive problems.Just good food combined properly for maximum effect.This book came into my life via a dear friend more than a decade ago, and it is by far the book that has impacted my life the most.I have, am, and will continue to recommend it to anyone who approaches me complaining of any eating issues, or disorders.Those who have read and tried the suggested eating patterns in this book, have been grateful to have come across it.If I could give it 100 stars, I would; but alas, five is the most I can give, and so I have.

Many years ago I followed this eating plan and was very successful with losing weight. I purchased the newer edition because it had additional information that my older one did not and I am using it this time around for health reasons. In the month I have used the eating plan I have lost weight, feel more clear headed and energetic. Also, I just got my labs back and for the first time since last using this plan(15 yrs ago) my cholesterol panel is all normal! This can be a tough plan to follow in the beginning, so as the book says take it a step at a time and don't try to do everything it states on day one. Pick the things in the plan you can do and continue adding more as you are comfortable. The more you do, the more results you will have. I know I have had great results by following as much as I could and each day finding I could do a little more. I found it was best to completely read the book through before starting the plan, this way you will have understanding of why you need to eat the way they state.

Read the original Fit For Life back in the 80's. Couldn't find my copy so when looking the book up, saw this updated version and decided to purchase. Was disappointed and have gone ahead and ordered the original. Alot of fluff and no recipes. Wasn't as impactful as the original book.

I read his original Fit For Life book back in the 90s and tried his recommended way of eating. It worked for me very well. Years later, I thought about it again and decided to purchase the book again, saw this version and thought I’d buy it instead. Big mistake! The author rambles on and on for probably over 90% of the book about nonsense and practically says his way of eating will cure cancer. I was VERY disappointed in the purchase. If you want information on food combing as a way of eating, there are plenty of websites out there that give you the same information, without all the nonsense and rambling, and it’s free. Don’t waste your money! If I could’ve given this zero stars I would have.

This is the only book that I have ever bought that I can follow and actually lose weight on. The principles in this book are simple to follow. I brought this book when I was out of college (many moons ago) and lost weight. I was actually losing so much weight (plus running about 4 x's a week). You can have whatever you feel like eating, there are no restrictions - AT ALL. I stayed at a size 8 for years. Now almost 30 years later I'm at a size 12 and retired. I am now ready again to be FIT FOR LIFE! IT WORKS!

Nutrient absorption is impaired, and food would end up sitting in the digestive tract longer than it should, exposing it to a higher incidence of putrefication whenever it encounters sugary substances (desserts after a meal is a bad idea). This contributes to rapid putrefication - imagine foul odious sludge & gas sitting in one's intestines, going no where and the resulting emissions!. Rather - the aim is to maximise digestion and absorption and waste material expelled in the shortest possible time.RATHER than carbs as the common food staple, theory advocates treating vegetables as the staple (common food) to be taken together with proteins and then separately in a different meal with carbs. Importantly, Diamond advocates that fruits be consumed on an empty stomach, best for breakfast in any amount till satisfied up till noon. The rationale here is to avoid diverting fresh energy from the previous night's good sleep to digesting a heavy meal, preferring rather to channel the available energy to the day's morning pursuits. Simple carbs from fruits are in absorbable form and provides the required energy for the cleansing (waste mgmt) cycle in the morning - when excretion best take place. A logical deduction from here then is for carbs & vegetables to be eaten at lunch - hence allowing the energy it generates to be used through the afternoon (rather than stored overnight). Proteins & vegetables otoh, is best consumed at night to resource muscle repair & recovery after the day's pursuits.This overall eating formula aims to promote digestive health as well as aid effective weight loss - and it works! Caution though that what works for one may not work or be redundant for another. Hence listen to your own body. It's a gem for me.

The author, a public policy professor at Maryland, has written the definitive study of the rise of conservative lawyers and entities to a position of legal dominance over the last 30 years or so. He has pulled together into one explanatory structure a number of diverse agents, so that we can see how they all interacted and contributed to this result. The book certainly cleared up my understanding of this phenomenon, which is essential to grasping political developments in this country over the last quarter century. Published by Princeton, the book is one of Princeton's outstanding "Studies in American Politics."The initial introductory chapter I did not find particularly helpful and can be bypassed. The book begins to hit its stride in the second chapter on the "liberal legal network." It is helpful to have handy a copy of Laura Kalman's perceptive "The Strange Career of Legal Liberalism" to fully ingest the author's analysis. Basically, the author suggests, a combination of liberal legal groups (e.g., NAACP LDF; ACLU), elite law schools and their liberal faculty, the American Bar Association, and especially the Ford Foundation during the 1960's formed a potent coalition pushing the incorporate of liberal ideas into the law. This is, of course, also the era of Warren Court activism. Particular important in this regard was the "Gideon" decision which in turn led to the development of the Legal Services Program which unleashed numerous law suits pushing liberal ends in public interest litigation. Much of this activity was encouraged by generous support from the Ford Foundation. This activity generated a conservative response via conservative public interest law firms such as the Pacific Legal Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. However, because of being controlled by business interests, lacking academic support, and making tactical mistakes, the first generation of conservative public interest firms generally was not successful.A highly favorable development was the introduction of "law and economics" into legal analysis, and the two chapters devoted to this topic are among the best in the book. Particularly important in this regard are, of course, Judge Posner, Henry Manne (who established various programs at several schools and remade George Mason Law School), and the Olin Foundation, which becomes sort of the conservative Ford Foundation. Probably the strongest chapter in the book is devoted to the Federalist Society, which skillfully lays out its history, goals, and methods. The author is insistent that "boundary maintenance" separates the FS from its members'political activity, but I found this argument less than convincting. The FS did provide a network of highly skilled lawyers and faculty who generated vital legal analysis to support the conservative legal movement. So, when the second waive of conservative public interest law firms arrives in the late 1980's ("Center for Individual Rights" and the "Institute for Justice"), it is successful given the lessons of the past, the presence of the Federalist Society, the academic foundation laid by the law and economics movement, and highly effective leadership.This summary touches upon but a bit of the richness of this fine volume. The author had done a superior job of research, including extensive interviews. Forty-three pages of extensive notes are included, but not a bibliography. It would have been helpful if the author had explained a bit more in detail what comprised "law and economics" analysis, but that is my only real complaint. This is not a book just for conservatives, which I certainly am not, but for anyone interested in gaining an understanding of this most critical development in American politics.

A very informative book.

It was nurtured and grown by men (mostly) willing to openly exchange views with each other without rancor or hatred. They were all in pursuit of of a more just and lasting society, and the movement grew as America was crumbling.Teles does a remarkable job of demystifying this movement and explaining why it's neither Republican nor Libertarian, and why the movement is so open to differing points of view. While American Academia pillories independent thought, the Conservative Legal Movement welcomes and accepts it. Teles explains the phenomenon and explains why liberals are so willing to address conservative lawyers, knowing that even if the crowd disagrees with them, they will always be treated well.The art of disagreeing without being disagreeable seems to be the theme of the book. It's an enjoyable read.

Along with my son, we agree that the series is engaging, fun, and much more fun and realistic than Harry Potter! Despite the advanced relationship concept in the Olympians series, House of Hades, that too is a great series/continuation. Parents, definitely read Hades prior to...it is a brief mention of one male character's infatuation with the main male character, nothing much more than that. But I still had to explain the nature of relationships to a 10 year old who still thinks mommy and daddy's kissing is gross.

My son couldn't put them down. He is 9 years old and although he's a good reader, there have been only a few book series that have held his interest. He is an avid Harry Potter reader. I bought the entire set based on reviews and reading more information about the Percy Jackson series to see if this would hold interest. I took a chance on the whole series instead of just getting the first book. I am glad to say that he read them all in three weeks, even re-reading a couple of the books because he figured it his favorite ones - (the first and last books). He read before school, after school, even opting out of video games to read. So happy to have found another write he loves.

My 12 year old daughter is literally carrying a book with her from this set everywhere she goes and is actually reading the entire book. I guess I should explain a little that my daughter has ADD and really dislikes reading. I have tried to get her interest with other books with no success. She would read a chapter or two of other books and then lay them to the side. This series she is excited about and tells me all about what she is reading. What really got her interested is that the main character has ADD as well. The storyline has action and excitement for her and she loves the mythology aspect of the books. She is on book three and wants more of these. I'm just so excited for her!!!

This book series is excellent, well written, and storyline flows very well. The author uses humor throughout the books that really adds to the quality of the writing and makes the stories even more enjoyable. This is by far my favorite book series. It's probably the only series of books I could read over and over (I like to have new adventures with new stories, rather than the same ones).If you like greek mythology and adventure books, you will likely love these, and I encourage you to take a chance and read the first one. You'll fall in love. By the end of the series, you'll be so attached to the characters, you'll want there to be more stories about them (check out Heroes of Olympus, because there are). It really doesn't matter what age you are, if you like adventure and greek mythology, you'll enjoy these books.Five stars for the book series itself, and 2.5 stars for the paper back set. I'm extremely careful with my books, and the first book had the front cover get bent into a crease the first day of reading it. Being a perfectionist, I was not happy how easily these books get damaged. I can't imagine how bad they might bent up if a kid handled the book roughly. The artwork is pretty, the books should just be more durable.The books are also so snuggly packed into the display box, that I worry I'll bend the pages or they'll be damaged trying to slide them back in. I highly recommend spending the extra money and getting the hardcover version instead.Overall excellent, just get the hardcovers or buy more durable papercover of each book.

I wish you could give different rating for the stories themselves and the quality of the books. I love Rick Riordan and I love all his different series. The stories themselves are absolutely 5 stars. However, the Box Set itself is arrived in TERRIBLE condition. All 4 corners bent it, tear in the back cover, scratches/dents everywhere. If you're a collector or something I wouldn't purchase this box set. Thankfully, I'm not I just wanted to have an actual hard copy of the books. I love Riordan's demigod worlds too much to not give his books 5-stars. But the actual quality of the items I received deserve 1-star, and that's being generous.

I had a couple of friends tell me to read this series a few years ago since they know that I am a fan of mythology, but I kept putting it off. Last year, I ran into someone on campus that was reading them and asked him if they were any good. He told me that they were great and that I should really give them a chance. I finally gave in and downloaded the epubs. I was instantly hooked. It took me about two weeks to read all of them.I regret not reading these books sooner. The story is really action packed and hilarious. It was fun to watch the characters go on their adventures and evolve as individuals. I really liked the modern twist to each of the gods. Despite the fact that this book is supposed to be for kids, it's a great series for people of all ages. I got myself this box set as soon as I had a few bucks. I look forward to reading Riordan's HoO series and the Kane Chronicles.I originally wanted to get the hardcover box set with the first edition covers, but it was too expensive. I decided to get the paperback edition with John Rocco's new art on it instead. These covers are amazing. They make me want to keep reading the books over and over again. I highly recommend these books to anyone and everyone.

I discovered Mr. Riordan because I was bored. Great start for a review... it gets better. I absolutely had to find something new to read. I saw a beautiful cover and a good-sized book on the bestseller rack at a grocery store I shop at, and it looked to be... unusual. I read the book flaps and was hooked. This was the start. After Magnus Chase, I ordered all I could find from Author Riordan and was rewarded with funny scenes, off-beat silly humor and a kind of innocence just shy of jaded maturity - I learned a lot of mythology. I was refreshed to read such unending novelty. I got a glimpse of mischief and mayhem. The characters are believable and three-dimensional, set on a stage with live props done by .. oh, somebody crazy, maybe Vincent. I give Percy Jackson two thumbs up just for being so damned likable.

What a wonderful book, complete with beautiful color pictures, directions, and histories of most of the lighthouses. It was an invaluable tool when I drove my Mother around Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Including prices in the book would have been helpful, but I understand why they were not included. Some lighthouses were free to visit (Point Iraquois Light, Michigan), some were $8 to visit (Split Rock Light, Minnesota) and some were $3 for a one-hour car pass in Wisconsin. Other than that, I don't know how Roberts and Jones could improve their book. I assume their "Eastern Great Lakes Lighthouses" is just as fantastic.

I found this guide ideal when I used it to locate lights to visit in this region last year. Bruce Roberts' superb photography and Ray Jones interesting and informative narrative significantly enhanced my enjoyment in visiting the lights.

There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have. Since there are so many books in this series I thought I'd help people find them easier. I know that Bruce and Ray Jones don't visit or include all of the Great Lake lights in their books, but it is highly arguable that they do portray the best looking ones. I travel from Chicago to Upper Peninsula and have to include their books on the trip with all of the excellent directions. They are excellent travel guides and provide nice context to why and where they lights originated and give sufficient information about the beacon. They are my number one travel books when I go on a lighthouse expedition and they are bar none no better book published with directions on Great Lake lighthouses.
