Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. You are living in the times of the inevitable surrender of the pharmaceutical/governmental/medical establishment cabal to the truth. It will be difficult, but the truth is leaking out in spite of their best efforts. Pity the poor people who still yield their health management to their doctors entirely.

Good read. Has adequate references. Makes good points. Probably a bit light on references and biased in its research and viewpoints. I wouldn't bet your life on just this book's advice, but a worthy set of concepts to consider.

This is crazy. We need to remove the word science from medical science. Every time there’s a breakthrough answer, it proves to be totally false. So millions follow medical advice for nothing (and worse). And keep following it, as the false solutions persist despite debunking. The system is entirely corrupted by the pharmaceutical companies, planting false stories, fear mongering diseases and conditions, bribing doctors and corrupting medical journals. Justin Smith corrects the nasty reputation of cholesterol, breaks the relation to heart disease, and destroys the dietary regimens recommended for decades (and insisted on by health insurers). In Statin Nation, Smith presents the results of nine years’ research, highly documented. Why anyone should trust their doctor is about the only question unanswered.Smith is upsetting. He overturns decades of comforting facts. They are comforting because we have considered them as established and deal with them as real. But what Smith has found:-Only 39% of men and 34% of women with heart disease have high cholesterol.-High cholesterol correlates to longer life. Low cholesterol indicates shorter life expectancy.-A meta-analysis of 11 major studies concluded that statins offer no net benefit for prevention of death by all causes. But 75% take it for precisely that.-Big Pharma keeps lowering the safe cholesterol level, making it nearly unattainable and putting millions more in position for statin treatments for life.-Statins save approximately one life per thousand taking them. But result in hundreds of deaths because of them. They are unsafe drugs.-The recommended maximum 1.5-2g of sodium per day is too low and actually causes cardiovascular problems rather than preventing them according to numerous studies.-Stress, which used to be short and acute, is chronic in our society, and is the primary cause of cardiovascular ailments and death.-Fat is the heart’s preferred main source of energy, but stress changes that to glucose-burning instead.-86% of medical students think politicians should not accept gifts, but only 46% say the same for themselves.Smith never intended to go down this path. He began researching nutrition and fitness for a book and it has turned into nine years, two documentaries and this book, all focused on cholesterol. His basic discovery is that we continue to be misled, by both ignorance and fraud. Medicine actually has very few firm answers, just a lot of trends and anecdotes in the form of inadequate studies, the worth of which remain hidden from the public. VIRGINIA WOOLF: A PORTRAIT comprises a series of biographical snapshots that roam freely through past, present and future, combining different moments in her often colorful life within each chapter to help us better understand the mind of this complex personality. Forrester is especially preoccupied with Woolf's relationship to husband Leonard, a complex character who from this account emerges as someone who claimed to love his wife dearly yet remained perpetually resentful of her success, especially when it was Leonard who constructed himself as the business manager in charge of Hogarth Press. Such inadequacies had a lot to do with Leonard's family life as he was brought up by a dominant mother who heartily resented his decision to marry someone like Virginia, despite her social advantages.The overriding impression persisting through Forrester's work is that of innate sadness. Woolf was possessed of an innate genius, the ability to create fiction that radically redefined the way we approach the act of reading. Like her or loathe her, you cannot deny that she bestrode the world of early twentieth century literature like a Colossus, generating heated debate among her readers as well as causing controversy herself through her nonfictional writing. She was happiest when she was alone, trying to make sense of what was buzzing within her mind through crafting prose.Yet Woolf was also a public figure, a member of the Bloomsbury Group as well as a noted broadcaster, speaker and socialite. Yet what emerges from Forrester's book is her fundamental inability to fulfill this role; having suffered mental difficulties through her childhood and early adulthood, she experienced similar agonies, in spite of her dedication to the Bloomsbury cause. Woolf became more and more conscious of the futility of her efforts, despite her success as a writer, which helps to explain her decision to take her own life once World War Two had broken out.One of the popular stereotypes about Bloomsbury is to characterize it as an artistic powerhouse of ideas embraced by Woolf, Roger Fry, Clive Bell, Maynard Keynes and others. This might be true, but Forrester's work suggests that such ideas might represent nothing more than strategies trying to make sense of the present in relation to the past; and ultimately failing in their stated purpose. Hence Woolf's increasing disillusion with the world around her.To be honest, Forrester's biographical speculations sometimes tend to run away with her, prompting readers to skip certain sections of the book and focus on her conclusions instead. About the Author

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) is one of the greatest lyric German poets. Born in Prague, he published his first book of poems, Leben und Lieber, at age nineteen. He met Lou Salomé, the talented and spirited daughter of a Russian army officer, who influenced him deeply. In 1902 he became a friend, and for a time the secretary, of Rodin, and it was during his twelve-year Paris residence that Rilke enjoyed his greatest poetic activity. In 1919 he went to Switzerland where he spent the last years of his life. It was there that he wrote his last two works, Duino Elegies (1923) and The Sonnets to Orpheus (1923).   Stephen Mitchell was born in Brooklyn in 1943 and studied at Amherst, the University of Paris, and Yale. Considered one of the preeminent translators of his generation, he has translated many classic texts including Gilgamesh, The Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching, and The Book of Job.

"For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure..."I could say the same of Rilke's poetry.. full of beauty, but also terror... spanning the vast expanse of human emotions and experience. These are the poems that resonate in my life and carry me through my darkest and soul searching times. Rilke's poetry itself communicates the eternal spiritual search, devoted to the truths that can be attained through devotion of one's life to craft, to art, to observation.I was introduced to them in college and reading them for the first time struck a cosmic chord in me. I would say that they saved me in my times of great crisis.Rilke's poems are ones that you can read over and over and find new meanings every time.I understand some German so I appreciate the German translations. Mitchell sometimes takes great liberties with the translations, so I like doing my own translations.

I fail to see how so many people have lauded Mitchell's translations. While his renderings of Rilke contain some very fine passages, he takes astonishing liberties that too often cheapen the poems. He gets dreamy where Rilke is concrete, and concrete where Rilke is expansive. I finally gave up on him when I reached the Second of the Duino Elegies: the original "wo wir fühlen," or "where we feel," becomes "when moved by deep feeling," and "von Holzglut zu Holzglut," or "from ember to ember," becomes "from moment to moment." There's taking appropriate license as a translator, and then there's dipping poems in syrup. I advise going elsewhere for your English Rilke.

I'm really not a fan of this translation, which is disappointing. Any translation loses something and is filtered through the creativity and abilities of the translator, which means some of them end up quite different. I'm always looking for that perfect version that combines my favorite ways of translating different parts of Rilke's poems, but this is not it for me. (For the record, my favorite Rilke translators are Stephen Mitchell and A. Poulin, but I invariably end up liking half an elegy as translated by one, and the other half as translated by the other. If you're not a fan of either of them, my opinion may not be worth much to you.)It's possible this is a more direct translation than either of the other two I mentioned, but I prefer when the translator deviates from the direct wording to capture the spirit, beauty, and, well... poetry, of the thing. This feels distinctly lacking in poetry to me, and sometimes the grammar and wording actually make it hard to comprehend.

These are poems & can't be described in the same terms one applies to fiction. If there is an underlying narrative here it is the one that makes all poems happen -- the passage from darkness to darkness with interludes of light

Translator Mitchell can't go wrong. But I've never liked the expression of Rilke on the cover (this is my second copy over the years). It is a beautiful book hold and read.

Beautifully translated... a few poems, such as A Walk, were not in this edition and wished there were more from Love Poems to God...but the translations are superior.

Rilke is great poetry. And I am glad to have thisand other translations of his poetry on my desk.

I'm going to start off by saying I don't write many book reviews, although I do read a lot. And I mean, A LOT. Reading is a great escape for me especially when real life can be messy and complicated enough, thank you very much. Lately I've been tired of the same "He has issues but she can fix him or she has issues but he loves her despite them" story lines. What I was really looking for was a story where two strong, intelligent characters worked well together, respected and genuinely cared about each other, and held on through whatever fate threw their way. This story was that and more. The hero is smart, strong, fiercely loyal and dangerous, while the heroine is intelligent, a good strategist, and kind to others regardless how she's treated. She is a great match for the hero. Another reviewer mentioned that it was pretty light on the "paranormal" and a little heavier on the "historical". That may be true, but in no way does it detract from the story. I'm a huge fan of paranormal romance myself (bring on the demons, witches, sorcerers, vampires, shifters, angels, etc.) but the story line was so good that I didn't feel like I was missing anything. There was some sexual content but it wasn't gratuitous and was appropriate to the story line. The chemistry and love between these two characters was well written. I had foregone sleep and was late to work just so I could find out how it ended. I was not disappointed and got my HEA. Also, I really appreciate there was no cliffhanger and the book was complete, not broken down into multiple parts to be purchased separately. I'm really looking forward to reading about the other "gifted ones" and where their adventures might lead them. So, thanks Dianne Duvall. This story was like a warm chocolate chip cookie after a crappy day. Exactly what I needed.

I am a fan of Immortal Guardians series. I then read the Rendezvous with Yesterday, The Gifted Ones Book 2. (Read and listened too and Loved!) and then I read and listened to this one where Dillon and His Sorceress overcome obstacles as the Gifted Ones series begins. Although I read these books in reverse order, this book provides us with the concept of the gifted ones and where other immortals (Seth, Roland, Marcus) are introduced. It is a wonderfully entertaining story. The narrator is great! Her inflections and different characters enhance the story. I listened, then read a little, then switched back to listening. I have listened twice and working on reading it through again. It's great to find a story that I can enjoy over and over again ! I have started listening to Marcus's story in the Immortal Guardians series again (enjoying it more since reading these Gifted Ones books). I highly recommend the audible whispersync version along with your Kindle ebooks.

I have degrees and history and I suspend belief when I read a paranormal fantasy, and those of you who love Duvalle’s writing then I ask you too, to suspend belief to enjoy a very good tale.In her immortal guardian book Night Reigns, Marcus’s past has been developed as one of being previously a young squire. The noble he was a squire for was Robert brother to the Earl of Westcott. The story in this book revolves around the Earl of Westcott Dillion and his aged Wisewoman.Duvall spins a fun, romantic and engaging tale of love, sacrifice, and treachery under the reign of Richard the Lionhearted. The book is not touted to be a historical treatise, and should not be read as one. It is about the love of a girls for a man, and what the girl is willing to give up for the man she loves.In all I really enjoyed the book, but I would have liked to have experienced the seven years prior to the main body of the story. As there is a seven year time jump from the first chapter to the second. It would have made the story more enjoyable if I could have experienced first hand the ugliness that Alyssa experienced at the hands of the people she sacrificed so much for. On the same note, for Dillon to be clueless as to the Wise Ones plight made him seem shallow, as to not recognize the ill will his own people had for their healer. I needed that one on one interaction as how she became Dillon’s trusted advisor, some camaraderie during the previous seven years.Please note this is adult paranormal romance with sexual situations on page. It can be read as a standalone and you don’t need any prior knowledge of Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardian series.

This is such a cute book. My 5 year old loves it and asked for the whole collection. He asks me to read it over and over again!

A fun yet informational book for kids of many ages. The character, in this case a spider, responds with humor to facts being described to him. This will make the readers laugh out loud as well as learn lots of interesting facts about spiders! A must for every child's library!

You need this entire series! These are the cutest books we've read in a long time and they're full of fun, gross, educational facts!

I bought all the books in this series and they are a hit with my 6 year-old grandson, who is just learning to read. They are very appealing in their content and are dosed with good humor.

Elise Gravel reliably creates delightful critter books.

Nobody really likes spiders. But Elise Gravel's funny and informative book The Spider makes them cute and approachable. Gravel describes spiders' habitats, mating habits (the female eating the male) and usefulness. She reminds us that most spiders are not dangerous, and they can even help us by eating insects. And did you know some spiders carry their babies on their backs? Now you do.I do have two mild criticisms: one, Gravel points out, correctly, that the spider is not an insect, as it has eight legs. But then she twice says spiders "eat other insects." This could be confusing. Second, as much as I like her silly drawings, I think a short appendix with photographs or realistic drawings of spiders would have add a lot to the educational value of the book.The witty text and silly drawings combine for a great little introduction to our friend, the spider. The Spider is fun, educational, and sure to be enjoyed by elementary age boys and girls.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

I bought this book for my mom as a bit of a joke as she always harasses me for relocating spiders rather than smooshing them. She thought it was a cute book and wanted to share it with my niece. Its a bit old for my niece (she's not quite 4) so my mom changed a few of the bigger words. My niece LOVES it. She has been here for 2 days and we have read it at least 10 times. It is definitely her new favorite book. Plus she has stopped insisting the spiders in her playhouse be mashed/removed and now cohabitates with them.
