Excellent art, only quips are the short page count, and also some pages had a small square of artwork while the rest of the page is left blank. Could've fit more artwork onto those pages or at least interviews/thoughts from the artist for the sake of maximizing the small amount of content we already get. I'm a big fan from metal gear saga, and this art book is awesome, i love the illustrations from many previous games, the details, the information is very complete, this art book includes iallustrations from metal gear solid 1, 2, 3 and peace walker. if you are a metal gear fan don't miss this art book, for me one of the best art books available at amazon.

I love Metal Gear Artwork, especially from Yoji Shinkawa however, his books are elusive in the USA. So I bought Ashley Woods book, and it goes without saying that is art is very good. And whether you want some art to look at or you're searching for inspiration, go ahead and get the book. The only thing I feel this book lacked was a commentary, or even an interview of Ashley Wood, I always enjoy hearing an artists comments of their work. The book has NO WORDS, just art. That's my only gripe, lack of commentary.

It's hard to describe the beautiful brush works of Ashley Wood by words... But there're few things I can say for sure... Once you see it, you won't forget the poetic baeuty of his illustrations. Brush strokes, textures, subtle colors, and clever angles... You'll be charmed by them...and will want to see them over and over again. This is totally worth buying.(And of course, if you are fan of his art from the videogames, now you have the chance to relax and take a good look at his artwork without pressing the game controller buttons! haha)

I remember seeing Ashley Wood's in the Metal Gear Solid games and wanted to see more of it. I started to look into Ashley Wood's work who I have a art style similar to.Also, I needed more art reference books to fill my bookshelf. When I the book arrived I was like woah this is the best art book I have every bought so far. Its just so raw, so gritty and so amazing. Ashley Wood is such a gestural artist. You can look at these paintings and drawings on a computer screen but it isn't the same as looking at them in print. This is a book I would recommend for the developing artist.

I would say in my opinion, but its basically a fact. Ashley Wood is hands down one of the best artists out there today. Hes got a different style that is original and not really seen much these days. This book consists of the already awesome characters from Metal Gear Solid, just done in a whole new way. Buy it there is no way you'll regret it, in fact buy the actually Metal Gear Solid graphic novel. Its a good story line with great art.

Eliza Griswold is the author of The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam, which won the 2011 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. Her translations of Afghan women’s folk poems, I Am the Beggar of the World, was awarded the 2015 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. She has held fellowships from the New America Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and Harvard University, and in 2010the American Academy in Rome awarded her the Rome Prize for her poems. I want to correct the record....Troy Jordan was not an EPACID agent. He was an inspector for the EPA RCRA program. He had expertise in oil and gas wells having worked in Oklahoma, but he was NOT a CID agent. I too was disheartened when he left to work for Chesapeake Energy, but thar's the way it goes. He was very concerned that among other things theState of PA would allow a gas well to be constructed within feet of a day care facility, among other things. So, his heart was in the work, trust me. To my knowledge no EPACID agent went to work for any gas drilling company. I will correct more records as I continue to read this book. Oh and another thing, hydrofracturing or fracking was a new process and the science had not caught up with the technology at the time the book was written. Gas drilling was largely the responsibility of the State, in this case PA. So, to investigate and hold someone or a company criminally liable was next to impossible. The statutes and regulations did not exist. So yes, CID agents came and went because there was so little they could do to make things whole. My heart goes out to the landowners as they got wholly screwed over.

Having read quite a few books about the environmental messes (with attendant health problems) that some companies have created, I found "Amity and Prosperity..." to be an interesting approach. Ms. Griswold is apparently a poet (among other skills), and she brings a poetic touch to the profoundly upsetting story about the health consequences of fracking in rural southwestern Pennsylvania -- the beginning of Appalachia. That has its pluses and minuses; she writes sparingly, which is good; the book is not weighted down by endless recitations of facts that could be tedious. On the other hand, there's a sort of haphazard, sketchy quality to the book, which is not so good. She touches upon any number of issues, but randomly; none of them is covered in a way that a "conventional" non-fiction work would likely handle things, so you finish the book sort of saying "so?"Still, it's good, but it's also a mixed bag of sorts. Worthwhile reading, but if you really want to read the quintessential book about industrial pollution and the consequences it can have on a community, try "A Civil Action" by Jonathan Harr; you won't forget it.

Excellent book on fracking and how it affected several families. Yes people in her community found jobs, made some money off gas leases, but at what cost to others such as the Haneys and the Voyles families? Another excellent book on the state of America and how some of the middle class people who work hard , play by the rules get screwed over by greed and endless delays in legal matters. To be fair, the company doing the drilling, did provide much needed money to this area, with jobs, leases and community support at fairs and parks and other donations. The Haneys and Voyles familes would not agree as they suffered from contaminated water and air. This book made me aware of the dangers of fracking and the cover ups of chemicals used in the process. How will fracking affect our country going forward? We shall see.

There is a disquieting aspect to this "crossover"work combining journalism and elegant storytelling. The seemingly bad people go unpunished, and the good protagonists do little more than survive. Still, it is an engrossing portrayal of the state, business, and individual actors in a drama focused on the consequences of fracking to the people affected, for good or had.

***SPOILERS*** The author has well-versed in the craft of writing and creates a vivid picture of how corruption and corporate greed can ruin the lives of those without the means to fight. I felt very sorry for the victims/plaintiffs in this matter and angry at Range Resources, the DEP, and the other defendants in this action. However, unless you want to close the book at the end, feeling quite depressed and convinced of the futility of ever fighting for what's right and winning, don't read this.

Well documented accounting of how the fracking industry affected several small towns that were already suffering unemployment and population loss. It is several women with families who take it upon themselves to challenge the companies doing the fracking, which was often done at a risk to themselves and their reputations. It is a modern day case of David and Goliath. Interesting reading, and because of the families involved, you want them to win.

Amity and Prosperity was a terrific read. As one who is facing the possibility of an oil and gas company drilling 19 wells within a mile of my home in order to frack beneath our subdivision - without the permission of a majority of residents - I found this an especially compelling story. I thought the author did an outstanding job of describing the individual players involved in this drama and how the oil & gas company’s actions affected their lives and their relationships with one another. And, while acknowledging some positive impacts (primarily for a few individuals), her description of how and why the company was able to operate as it did is disturbingly familiar to those of us facing their encroachment. Moreover, with laser precision, she also illuminated the impotence of the “justice” system to achieve anything remotely resembling actual justice in this situation, given the economic and political forces at work. And, given the history of the coal and steel industries in this particular rural community, the author elicited and amplified my own empathy for the families so powerfully impacted by this earth-shattering industry.

I love this series but this is one of the weaker ones. The storytelling and artwork wasn't as strong after the first chapter (the result of Noelle Stevenson's absence?), and I didn't care very much about what was going on when the merpeople. This series works best when the stories are centered on the core group of girls, their friendships, their conflicts. The first chapter of this volume was very cool, though, as it served as kind of an origin story. I hope Volume 6 gets back to what I love so much about this series, but I am worried quality will suffer as Noelle Stevenson becomes less involved.

A very great series that my daughter looks forward to with each book.

I don't often write bad reviews, and I've never before returned a book. Unfortunately, there's a first time for everything. The authors mean well, but the book is very light on content and can be summarized as: "Write real content. Don't be spammy. Use social media."Though not a factor in my 2-star review -- I think any book review should judge content and content only -- the writing and editing are atrocious. If more than one person has read a manuscript, there is just no excuse for beginning multiple sentences and proper nouns with lowercase letters. Lesser offenses include things like "Youtube," "ice-cream," and "its'."Peppered throughout the book are useless quotations and interviews with unknown figures. Clayton T. Hasbrook, J.D., whom the reader should know as the owner of OklahomaLawyer.com, engaged in the following dialogue with the authors:Q: "How do you decide what firms you should use when searching for marketing help?"A: "There is a little sticker shock. You can find web firms that are $2,000 and firms that are over $20,000. That can make it difficult to choose."I mean no disrespect to Mr. Hasbrook, (J.D.,) but use the exchange as an illustration of one of the authors' methods of padding their book with irrelevant, unhelpful content. (The wide margins, huge type size, full-page screenshots, and blank pages marked "Notes" don't hurt, either.)The authors repeatedly direct the reader to one of their websites. They have a curious way of doing this: stopping suddenly in the middle of the body of the chapter in order to display a graphic and a URL that together take up one half of one page. If you do not remember where you saw one of these URLs, they can all be found in the back of the book, where they for some reason are reproduced exactly.I have to give the authors credit for, toward the end of the book, dropping all pretense of original content and unashamedly hawking their marketing services.Take Chapter 11. It's captioned "How To Get Help Getting All of This Done," and you get three guesses as to how the authors would prefer you answer that question. Of course, your website gets a free review by a "certified" (?) expert. It's a $200 -- wait, no, the website says it's actually $297 -- value, but you're given a promotion code worth $200 (or is it $297?).Which may or may not be worth it. But by the time you get that review, you've given the authors your name, the name of your firm, your e-mail address, and your phone number.It's classic web marketing: give something crappy away for free in exchange for a bunch of data worth a whole lot more.Let me be quite clear in my criticism here. My complaint is not that the book is useless. It dutifully recites what I'd thought were commonly known factoids about Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn as any online marketing book should. But my sense is that anyone motivated enough to have ordered this book already knows of the existence of, say, Google AdWords and SuperPages. (And though it was not a factor in my review, I would invite the conspiracy theorist in you to consider the five similarly-styled 5-star reviews all posted within a week of each other.)No, my complaint is that the authors are asking a lot of money for what amounts to a printed iteration of those "Free Exclusive Reports!" you see gracing the upper-right corners of many small law firm websites.The authors have every right to advertise their services. But they would do themselves a favor by giving the information in this book away. It's not as if the content is original in any way.Since I've said all of this, I cannot resist the opportunity to go on the record with a substantive disagreement: law firms and solo practitioners considering the potential impact of Twitter on their business should proceed with caution. There is just no way that Twitter is going to build a law practice. Take it from a Generation Y'er.

But this book outlines the slow and steady approach for getting traffic, pushing out content, and making the magic happen.I understand that some advice in this book is time consuming. Registering with free listings is tedious, and they will try to up-sell you on results. But if you read this book and follow the instructions the rest will happen naturally. While I haven't followed every instruction in this book, I have done about 85% of the things suggested and I am boasting a first page, fourth Google result.To keep it short, this book has changed my whole approach to web presence. I was so amazed by the content and the real results that I shipped a second copy to a colleague of mine to help him out. One post should be about your area of practice and one post should be about your local community. This kind of advice is understandable and, more importantly, actionable.

I have to be honest. I wasnt sure what to expect when I bought this book. The internet markerting "world" can get a bit slimy. I have to say I was totally surpirsed. These guys obviously know their stuff...and they come from an ethical backround and that is nice to see. I defintely recommend it. This book appealed to me after I purchased a multi cooker machine. I expected it to be done well since I had previously had Beth Hensperger's book on bread machines and recipes. You WILL find rice and other (e.g. quinoa) ingredients to meet your diet and taste preferences. You have very valuable information in addition to recipes and procedures. Learn the types of rice, their uses and best practices (see the tips for making successful brown rice every time). My new regular is "Morning Rice Pudding." I now have this for my breakfast on Monday morning. I make a large batch and freeze individual servings. Taking out a serving the night before has it thawed and ready to warmup the next morning. The recipe calls for egg to be put into the pudding; however, I do not add an egg in the pudding, but I add a scrambled egg on top of the bowl of pudding. You can use almost any kind of dried fruit pieces as substitutes for the recipe's suggestions. Dried dates, blueberries, apples, peaches, etc. are great. I add double the amount the recipe calls for to enhance the flavor. For my low sodium lifestyle I always leave out the salt while cooking and mix in some salt substitute (potassium chloride) after reheating. The recipe calls for grated nutmeg on the serving - don't omit. It turns a good serving into a special morning treat! You will find many such interesting and motivating recipes to last a lifetime. Recipes from other sources calling for rice of any type will be made better with Beth's directions. The "Bejeweled Forbidden Rice Salad" from "The Healthy Mind Cookbook" is a favorite of mine. Beth's recommendations on preparing the "black" rice used in the recipe comes out far superior than the way the source cookbook suggests. So this book will multiply your success with cooking rice, other grains and other ingredients while working with other recipe sources.

I have owned this book for five years, and it is my go-to book for anything rice. And when we were remodeling my house (for TWO years - AAHH!), the book was in storage, and I sorely missed it.I unpacked it a few days ago, and I'm like a kid in a candy store. I'm making all my oldie fav's ----- Risi i Bisi (rice and peas) -- I tweak the recipe to make it with long grain brown rice (I'm a health but), and it tastes AMAZING. (I'm eating a second bowl of it now as I type) ;-p-- Vegetable Paella -- to die for. I tried many times to recreate the recipe while the book was in storage, and I failed utterly. I made it last night, and it was just as I remembered it.-- Mushroom and Asparagus Risotto -- I have the mushrooms and asparagus cut and cleaned, in the fridge, waiting to be made tomorrow.-- Italian sausage risotto -- I make this with Tofurkey brand vegetarian Italian sausage. Scrumptious.-- Thai curried rice -- I have NEVER tasted rice this good in a Thai restaurant. The flavors are exquisite.-- Moroccan Brown rice -- I love this, except that I convert it to an Indian dish: I add some Garam Masala and a bunch of veggies (carrots, onion, potatoes, as wells as peas and pan-seared cauliflower at the last minute) to turn it into the best vegetarian Biriyani I have ever had.There is a long list of recipes that I WANT to try, but I am so enamored with the ones that I mention above that I never get around to the other recipes. I mean, really, how much rice can a family eat? Excuses aside, I must discipline myself to try the other recipes....Can you tell that I like this book?!Oh, and although I have a fancy rice cooker, I usually cook the recipes in my cheapo Black and Decker rice cooker (also bought on Amazon.com). I have to catch it just as it clicks to "Keep-Warm" and take the bowl out of the cooker right away... otherwise, the bottom gets a bit browned. This is yummy in some recipes, but undesirable in others. However, this comment has nothing to do with this book, other than the fact that you don't need a $250 rice cooker to make these wonderful recipes. (I use my cheapo rice cooker because it's smaller, easier to get out of the cupboard and easier to clean.)= = = UPDATE 22 December 2012 = = =I have a large collection of cookbooks, but I rarely use them. There are, however, three cookbooks that I keep in my kitchen... and this book is one of them.As mentioned, I use a cheapo rice cooker, and I have no problem with the recipes. My only "gripe" is that the recipes use six-ounce "cups" -- I mentally convert each recipe to REAL cups, otherwise I can't "think" with the recipes. And yeah, sometimes I have to adjust the remaining ingredients of a recipe, but I've never had a problem. The recipes are really forgiving, and I've rarely had a dud. (The only duds have been when I had too much liquid in relation to the amount of rice. So I usually slightly underestimate the water. I can easily add more water, but I can't salvage a soggy batch of rice.)Some of my new "favs" are:-- French Pilaf (page 103) -- This produces the most AMAZING rice for when I serve vegetarian (or meat) shish-kabobs, and pairs EXTREMELY well with Middle-Eastern dishes such as Turkish lentil soup. Just make sure you saute the onions and rice long enough before adding the water. Also, slightly underestimate the water. This is way better when it is slightly a-la-dent.-- Mexican rice and beans (page 80-81). I add one chile in adobe sauce for added kick. Excellent one pot meal with a side salad, salsa and chips. (Add some cheese if you eat dairy)-- Butternut squash rissoto (page 120) -- OMG!! Did I die and go to heaven? I roast the butternut squash and then add it at the last moment. I also cook the rice with a little sage and thyme and a can of white cannellini beans for a one-pot meal (we are 80% vegan with the occasional lapse to keep our tummies happy)In all, this is a really useful book. Sometimes I use the recipes exactly, and sometimes I use them as a starting point. The important thing to keep in mind is the RATIO of rice to water. Usually, the ratio is 1 cup rice to 2 cups water... minus a little bit if you like your rice firm (which is how I like my rice), but the ratio can change a little depending on the type of rice. I always check the package of rice to see what the manufacturer recommends, and then I adjust a recipe accordingly.I've found the recipes to be really forgiving. I can have more or less of most any ingredient. The only thing that is CRUCIAL is the ratio of rice to liquid, and I solve that by slightly underestimating the liquids.And remember, vegetables are 70 - 80% water. Because I like to add lots of vegetables, I always subtract a suitable amount from the water/broth. If I add a cup of vegetables, I subtract 1/3 or 1/2 cups of water from the recipe. (I like to "overload" my rice dishes with vegetables -- it reduces calories... yay!)

I bought it for rice, and the occasional oatmeal. I've tried many of the rice recipes, and they've always turned out great. I routinely cook beans in the rice cooker now. I'd never made quinoa or buckwheat groats before having been inspired by the ease of prep and consistent outcome. Now I'm dabbling with the "whole meal" recipes. We have a small kitchen and the range of recipes in this book have helped me use space effectively by putting my cooker to work whenever I have a large meal to prepare.

I ordered this cookbook several days ago and then, after reading the negative reviews, was prepared to send this book back to Amazon. I should have known better. Beth Hensperger, who is one of my favorite cookbook authors, wrote this book and it is NOT just for fuzzy logic rice cookers. Some of the reviewers led me to believe that this book was useless and I took them at their word. Most of the recipes specify "fuzzy logic and on/off." Yes, there is a chapter devoted to puddings that indeed specify "fuzzy only" but for the most, this cookbook is good for all types of rice cookers. Lots of great recipes here and I am excited to try them as Beth Hensperger has never let me down.

This cookbook's thoroughness is rather impressive. The collection of recipes within scales extremely well for single people and smaller meals. I managed to cook the Arroz con Pollo with a 3-cup Zojirushi rice cooker, and it turned out fantastic even when cooking for just two people.The awareness of ingredients that are available at most ethnic supermarkets, like achiote paste, bring an excellent variety to the table. I look forward to making all the recipes, and one day even upgrading to the 10-cup rice cookers that many of the recipes utilize.

Grace Hartigan was never one of my preferred painters, Abstract Expressionist or otherwise. So I am probably disinclined to be excited by a book about her. But I did read it and it both lowered and increased my opinion of her. She was off-putting and rather mean. She made the most of her ability when she was young and painted some very lovely abstract paintings. Her later figurative paintings are of slight interest (to me and to art history.) She was a far better painter when she was young. Given what Curtis had to work with, she did a good job of illuminating Hartigan's work and social environment. One thing was quite odd though-Hartigan, in the most interesting phase of her life, was very close to the poet Frank O'Hara (whom she dumped for unclear reasons.) In this bio he is not referred to again-not even when he suddenly died when he was 40 in 1966. There is no mention of Hartigan's reaction to his death. This seemed odd to me. Another interesting part of her long life is her on and off friendships with the other female painters of her generation: Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler. I enjoyed learning about their long friendships with each other, both the highs and the lows.

excellent book...it captures Grace's personality, paintings. friends, thoughts ....all of it.... the profane and the transcendent.....Curtis has documented the time period as well.....I know this because I was there.... carefully researched and descriptive down to the essence of conversations..........

A fascinating, thoroughly researched and highly engaging portrait of an important artist who finally gets her due, thanks to Cathy Curtis's book. I knew little about Grace Hartigan beforehand, but the drama of her life as presented here quickly drew me in. The author strikes a rare balance between, on the one hand, empathy and understanding for her subject and, on the other hand, objective assessment of human flaws and challenges. This biography is multi-dimensional and richly rewarding for the reader.

I'm not an artist or an art history major - but I like art and I like reading bios of artists. I was really excited to see this as I have always wanted to know more about Grace Hartigan - beyond her work there were a couple of pictures of her I had seen from the 1950's - always laughing and seemingly reallly enjoying life. In some ways I wish what my fantasies were more in line with reality - but the credit here goes to Curtis who does not sugarcoat a thing ---I read one review that suggested the narrative bogged down in parts - perhaps. I too was more interested in the 1950's than her later work - but the fact is she had a long life and never quit producing - and it seems like many greats in any discipline it was her and her work that mattered to her more than others at times. I agree also with another reviewer, I hope Cathy Curtis is already at work on another book.

If i was not such a Hartigan fan, i would have put this down. Rather a snore of a read to my pov.

Grace Hartigan was a DAME. Drank, smoked, slept around, swore like a sailor. But more importantly she painted with PASSION. Coming of age alongside landmark artists like Wilhem DeKooning, Grace had a long hard slog establishing herself. Not until later in life did anything ever come easily for Grace.Very well written book, and it offers interesting insight into Hartigan's creative process. The story is quite colorful, and Grace Hartigan - although I had never heard of her - had an extremely colorful personality. Sure she could be a joy to be around, but without warning she could also cut people to shreds, including her own family.Grace lived a long and very full life, so understandably the narrative can drag a bit in spots. However, overall I enjoyed this thoroughly, and recommend this well researched biography to those interested in the seminal New York art scene of the 40s through 50s.Full Disclosure: received an Advance Review e-copy from netgalley.com
