#287 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
Bought the first book just from curiosity after seeing it mentioned (do not recall where exactly). Had no idea how fast hours will flew and night will become a day. Had to come back for the rest.Give it a try. I am sure you will not be disappointed.P.S. You may consider buying books individually though - there is no table of content so navigating 20000 kindle pages is a pain. Also somebody desided to use (I guess) color for the letters so on my Kindle keyboard text is not black as it should be but light grey (hard to read). Last but not least author's page of comments and thoughts at the end of each book are missing (same can be found in the individual copies of the book).
I am not giving this one-star review lightly. When I saw the boxed set has a 4.5 star average, it made me pause. I checked to make sure I was reviewing the right book. I read the four- and five-star reviews to make sure I wasn't missing something, to see if perhaps the series began slowly but got better as it went. In the end, I'm sticking to my guns: one star. Here's what I didn't like:- It's first-person and present tense. It's really, really hard to write a compelling space opera when you can't switch character POVs - and there's also no dramatic tension because you know the narrator has to survive!- There's very little world-building. An eight-book series could have spent some more time orienting the reader and giving background in what it means to live in a Gray-occupied world.- That's a symptom of a greater truth: the whole thing felt way, way rushed. The author hurried everybody into space extremely quickly. If he wanted the series to start in space, he should have just started it in space.- There are a LOT of one-sentence paragraphs. This may be stylistic, reflecting the way people form thoughts, but it's not proper for writing, in which a paragraph is supposed to be three to five sentences.- Because of that, the book is too stream-of-consciousness. Thoughts are presented in the manner they would have occurred to the narrator, not in a way that's designed to convey useful information to the reader.I could go on, but I believe I've demonstrated a number of serious structural problems with the book and the way it's written. It's not my intention to slag off the author, who obviously invested a lot of time and effort into producing a typo-free eight-book series. (Indeed, he provides a link at the beginning where readers can submit to him any typos they find in the text, the first time I've ever seen such a feature.) However, I did feel the need to provide a counterpoint to all the positive reviews.
I used to stay away from box sets but they have now become a friend of mine. It is so much easier to have a complete set of a series than to go and look them up one by one on my Kindle. This author is definitely one that I will continue to follow and re-read his books. And, to be completely honest, I never read much Sci-Fi until a few years ago. Am now enjoying the imagination and talent that it takes to write this type of fiction. In this set, there are 6 of the Freedom's Fire novels. They are: Freedom's Fire, Freedom's Fury, Freedom's Fray, Freedom's Fist, Freedom's Fall, and Freedom's Fate. Each and every one of these novels is action packed with Dylan Kane leading the charge.... Just imagine a base on an asteroid. Most interesting premise as is the idea to have a war above earth being fought for freedom below. Love the premise...Struggles for survival exist in each of these as does the intense action. There is also some propaganda involved which increases the plot. I also liked the idea that sometimes trusting your enemies becomes a factor. Who would have imagined that in this series? Not me, for sure. Not able to go wrong with this price and having this set on your Kindle and ready to read again at some point in the future. Most highly recommended.
Once started, it's hard to put down the series. It's science fiction, but it reads like it's real. The reader becomes so engrossed with the action, so attached to the characters you find it hard to put the book down. A great read, a fantastically well written story, an ending that is satisfying yet leaving the reader wishing for more.
There seem to be 2 major ways to write a story: liner and multi-threading.Linear is represented by Robert E Howard (Conan, Solomon Kane, Kull of Atlantis) and E.E. 'Doc' Smith (the Lensman series).Multi-threading is represented by Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time series) and George R. R. Martin (Game of Thrones series). Some writers describe an scene or atmosphere with many words and many paragraphs. They tend to have a high Gunning fog index.Robert E Howard's writing is so tight that dropping a single word may change the entire meaning of the sentence. One word sentences are an example of this type of writing. My personal rule-of-thumb is to read the first sentence of the story and judge if I want to read any more. If I can't decide after the first sentence, then I will read the first paragraph and make the final decision to continue reading or look for something else to read. You need to determine which type of reader you are. Some readers are like both linear and multi-threading stories. Most readers only like one type of story.I am a product of the 1950's and 1960's black-and-white USA Western movies and TV shows. I really hated it when the director threw a 'meanwhile, back at the ranch' segment at you.I like the writing style shown in the Freedom's Fire Box set.
Epic space opera adventure. Could use a final book to show the next final scenes. Thanks for this set guys.
They won't let me use profanity in my reviews,SO I have read 100books and written 1review. Also I have to write more than 20 words or they don't accept the review.. provincial narrow minds are stifling the review process. So,best series ever, read it or die.
